Position Overview

Role Objective:

As a key member of the management team, you will report directly to the Chief Investment Officer, taking charge of the Credit and Portfolio operations at Innovate UK Loans Ltd. Your primary focus will be to ensure compliance with established policies and procedures while promoting best practices in customer treatment and responsible lending.

Since the launch of the innovation loans initiative, significant funding has been allocated to a diverse range of innovative enterprises across the UK. Your role will involve engaging with various stakeholders and representing the Directorate's interests in policy and funding discussions.

Core Responsibilities:

  • Lead a dedicated team of credit and investment professionals, alongside portfolio management specialists, to effectively manage a portfolio of high-risk SME loans with structured finance characteristics.
  • Exercise delegated authority for credit and investment decisions, ensuring a thorough approach to arrears, defaults, and recovery actions.
  • Collaborate with department heads to formalize Innovate UK’s lending practices, ensuring alignment with the FCA’s Treating Customers Fairly principles.
  • Serve as the technical authority on credit and portfolio management, contributing to the organization’s risk governance framework.
  • Participate in the senior leadership team to drive initiatives within a customer-focused, product-oriented environment.
  • Foster strong relationships with senior leadership across Innovate UK and external stakeholders, including government entities.
  • Provide expert representation in public forums and government discussions as part of the senior management team.
  • Contribute to the Credit Committee as an executive member, providing insights and recommendations on key decisions.

This role encompasses additional responsibilities that align with the level of expertise and experience of the individual.

Candidate Profile:

  • Proven experience in SME lending or investment decision-making within financial institutions or alternative finance sectors.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage a portfolio of SME loan assets effectively.
  • Leadership experience with a track record of building and guiding high-performing teams.
  • Strong decision-making capabilities, balancing stakeholder interests.
  • Experience in engaging with government stakeholders and implementing policy initiatives.
  • Knowledge of fair value accounting and the credit process from origination to recovery.
  • Understanding of innovative business growth and funding strategies.

  • Expertise in managing loan portfolios collaboratively with management teams.
  • Excellent communication and negotiation skills, with a capacity for public engagement.
  • Ability to adapt and thrive in a dynamic environment, proactively developing new initiatives.

Travel Requirements:

This position may require occasional travel, primarily within the UK, with flexibility in arrangements.
