Position Overview
An exciting opportunity has emerged for a Secondment Charge Nurse (AFC band 6) within the Neurosurgery department at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.
This role is situated in a dynamic surgical ward that specializes in acute neurosurgical care, including stereotactic and telemetry services.
The successful candidate will play a pivotal role in supporting the Senior Sister and collaborating with the multidisciplinary team.
We seek an individual who is adaptable, approachable, diligent, and capable of working independently under pressure. The ideal applicant will demonstrate exceptional organizational and communication skills, along with the potential to cultivate leadership abilities. Extensive experience in Neurosurgery is essential, along with completion of the Neuro in-house training program.
Building and maintaining strong working relationships with all members of the healthcare team is crucial for delivering high-quality patient care. We are looking for a clinical expert who is dedicated to providing compassionate care to patients.
Key Responsibilities
The successful candidate will be responsible for:
- Leading the assessment of patient care and implementing strategies to reduce the length of stay for neurosurgical patients.
- Utilizing clinical judgment to evaluate diverse patient issues and recommend optimal care solutions.
- Ensuring effective communication with patients, their families, and healthcare professionals.
- Managing the ward autonomously in accordance with Trust guidelines.
- Maintaining accurate and timely patient care records.
- Assisting the Senior Sister in upholding healthcare governance standards.
- Applying professional judgment in the safe management of medications.
- Serving as a mentor and role model in neurosurgical care.
- Encouraging patients to make informed health choices.
- Participating in audits, surveys, and research initiatives.
- Conducting professional development reviews and clinical supervision for team members.
- Supporting the Senior Sister in ensuring the ward operates smoothly.
- Acting in the Senior Sister's absence as required.
- Assisting in the preliminary investigation of formal complaints.
- Being a point of contact for other departments and managing communication flow.
Working Environment
This position is offered on a fixed-term contract basis for a maximum of three months, with the possibility of early termination or extension based on the substantive post holder's circumstances.

Qualifications and Experience
Essential Criteria:
- Registered Nurse with valid NMC registration.
- Completion of a Neurosurgery Competency pack or equivalent.
- Completion of the national PEAP program for practice supervisors or equivalent teaching qualification.
- Extensive experience in Neurosurgery.
- Evidence of management experience and personal development.
- Ability to work independently and understand patient flow in an acute setting.
Desirable Criteria:
- Experience with acute Neurosurgical admissions.
- Academic achievements, working towards a degree.
Skills and Aptitudes
