Job Overview

This position offers an exciting opportunity for an Assistant Practitioner specializing in Mammography to join our dedicated team, contributing to the delivery of exceptional breast imaging services.

To qualify for this role, candidates should hold a Foundation Degree in Breast Imaging (FdSc), a Certificate of Higher Education in Mammography, or equivalent qualifications. While we prefer experienced candidates, we are open to training individuals who demonstrate the potential to meet the necessary training criteria. Evidence of prior learning is essential for funding purposes, and candidates must possess Functional Skills level 2 in English and Maths or GCSE grades A-C/4-9.

The ideal candidate will be enthusiastic, diligent, and possess outstanding communication skills. The position will be based at designated locations, with the expectation of travel across the region as needed to support the Trust's comprehensive service.

Knowledge of the National Health Service Breast Screening Programme and its objectives, as well as familiarity with the symptomatic breast cancer pathway, is crucial.

Due to the nature of this role, it is designated as having a gender-specific requirement. Consequently, this position is exempt under Schedule 9; Part 1 of the Equality Act 2010, and only female applicants are invited to apply.

Main Responsibilities

As an Assistant Practitioner, you will:

  • Deliver high-quality mammography services as part of the NHS Breast Screening Programme and Symptomatic Service under the guidance of a qualified Mammographer.
  • Adhere to established protocols as outlined by departmental guidelines and Scope of Practice.
  • Support Radiologists, Radiographers, and other members of the multidisciplinary breast imaging team.
  • Exhibit flexibility in service delivery, which may involve working across multiple sites and adapting to last-minute schedule changes.
  • Perform duties at various breast units and mobile screening units throughout the region, necessitating travel.

The United Lincolnshire Hospitals NHS Trust is one of the largest hospital trusts in the UK, providing a wide array of medical, surgical, pediatric, obstetric, and gynecological services to over 800,000 residents in the region. We operate multiple hospital sites and deliver services in various settings, employing approximately 7,800 staff members with an annual turnover exceeding £400 million.

Our Breast Services manage a population of around 127,000 women for NHS Breast Screening and see approximately 10,000 patients through GP-referred clinics each year. We operate from three primary sites and utilize mobile screening units that rotate through various locations.

Qualifications

Essential:

  • GCSE Maths and English Grades A-C/4-9 or Functional Skills Maths and English level 2 or equivalent.

Desirable:

  • Foundation Degree in Breast Imaging (FdSc) or Certificate of Higher Education in Mammography or equivalent training.
  • SCoR Accreditation.

Experience

Essential:

  • Experience working within a breast screening unit.
  • Basic IT skills.
  • Ability to demonstrate literacy and numeracy skills.

Desirable:

  • Familiarity with IT systems such as CRIS, NBSS, and PACS.

Knowledge and Skills

Essential:

  • Understanding of the Assistant Practitioner role in breast imaging for both screening and symptomatic services.
  • Adherence to professional conduct and boundaries of practice.
  • Ability to work independently or collaboratively within a team.
  • Proficient in collecting, recording, and organizing information systematically.
  • Strong communication skills.
  • Reliability and consistency in performance.
  • Good judgment in decision-making.
  • Professional demeanor and appearance.

Desirable:

  • Basic understanding of common conditions related to breast screening.
