In the London office, the Compliance and Risk Management Attorney will primarily assist the Money Laundering Risk Officer (MLRO), Money Laundering Compliance Officer (MLCO), Compliance Officer for Legal Practice (COLP), and the Firm's global Compliance Officer. This role encompasses two key areas: (1) enhancing, managing, and overseeing the procedures, standards, and controls mandated by the Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA) regarding Anti-Money Laundering (AML) and other compliance areas, and (2) supervising and leading the London compliance team to ensure adherence to the Firm's AML, Counter Terrorist Financing (CTF), and Client Due Diligence (CDD) policies.

This position will report directly to the Firm's global Compliance Officer, with indirect reporting to the MLRO, MLCO, and COLP in the London office.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Ensure compliance with the Firm's internal AML/CTF, CDD, and screening policies during the onboarding of new clients and matters.
  • Provide legal and regulatory guidance on AML/CTF matters concerning new client and matter intake, particularly for high-risk clients and issues related to trade sanctions.
  • Lead the London Compliance team in collaboration with the global Compliance Officer, fostering integration of compliance management into business processes and enhancing the skills of team members.
  • Promote a culture of risk and compliance awareness within the London office, engaging with partners and colleagues on regulatory requirements and streamlining processes.
  • Monitor and report on developments in U.K. AML/CTF regulations and SRA expectations, updating stakeholders and coordinating with relevant officers on policy adjustments.
  • Oversee compliance monitoring efforts in the London office, addressing concerns and advising stakeholders on necessary improvements.
  • Develop and deliver training for attorneys and staff on client intake processes, focusing on CDD and AML/CTF compliance.
  • Coordinate responses to U.K. AML/CTF questionnaires and annual returns, leading the preparation of the London office's AML/CTF risk assessments.
  • Act as a deputy for the MLRO or Deputy MLRO as required, ensuring timely assessment of internal suspicious activity reports.
  • Participate in discussions and testing of new software applications related to client intake and compliance initiatives.
  • Assist with various compliance-related projects and ad hoc duties as needed.

  • Ability to manage multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment while maintaining accuracy and timeliness.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with attention to detail and advanced data analysis capabilities.

Experience:

  • Qualified lawyer with expertise in AML/CTF, ideally with a minimum of three years of experience in a senior role within a global law firm or relevant regulatory body.
  • In-depth understanding of legal and regulatory obligations in England, including Money Laundering Regulations and SRA Standards.
