We are seeking a dedicated Café / Kitchen Manager to oversee operations for 35 hours each week.
This role is ideal for someone with a culinary background who is ready to advance their career. You will be actively involved in the daily operations of our café, collaborating closely with our hostel staff. The Kitchen Manager will lead kitchen shifts, ensuring the preparation and presentation of our menu items while maintaining exceptional standards in the kitchen. Responsibilities include managing inventory, placing orders, training team members, and adhering to health and safety protocols. You will work in conjunction with the Hostel Manager and Deputy Manager to achieve our operational objectives.
Located in the scenic South Downs National Park, YHA South Downs is a converted farmhouse that accommodates 68 guests, along with unique lodging options such as LandPods, Pods, and Bell Tents. We cater to a diverse range of visitors, from school groups to individual travelers exploring the South Downs Way, and our café is open to the public.

Key Responsibilities of the Kitchen Manager:
The Kitchen Manager plays a crucial role in managing the operational budget and achieving key performance indicators (KPIs). You will support various customer-facing duties across the hostel, ensuring that all guests and visitors receive exceptional service and a memorable experience at YHA.
Your Daily Responsibilities May Include:
- Overseeing the food and beverage operations within the hostel.
- Leading the preparation and service of food to meet YHA standards.
- Conducting cleaning tasks primarily in the kitchen and food service areas.
- Reducing food and beverage waste.
- Maximizing food and beverage profitability.
Required Skills and Experience:
The Kitchen Manager position requires flexibility to cover various shifts and responsibilities. While previous customer-facing experience is beneficial, it is not mandatory. Experience in hospitality or customer service, particularly in delivering high-quality service, is advantageous.
Significant experience in the hospitality sector is preferred, along with a strong understanding of food and beverage best practices. Desired qualifications include City & Guilds 706/1&2, NVQ4, or equivalent experience, as well as a Food Safety Level 2 Certificate. Familiarity with allergens and health and safety compliance, along with excellent numerical skills and experience in stock management and waste reduction, is essential.
Strong communication skills, punctuality, and basic IT proficiency are also beneficial.
Understanding YHA's core mission and having experience working collaboratively in a team environment are advantageous.
