Position Overview

The Chief of Industrial Strategy will oversee the formulation and execution of a comprehensive strategy aimed at enhancing the supply side of the UK economy.

This role will outline how the UK can maintain competitiveness in a multifaceted global landscape characterized by rising geopolitical challenges. It is essential to address macro trends such as digital transformation, demographic shifts, and sustainability efforts. The focus will be on leveraging the nation’s strengths in key sectors including advanced manufacturing, creative industries, green technologies, and financial services.

The strategy must be crafted in collaboration with the business community, providing them with the clarity and confidence necessary for making long-term investments. The Chief will utilize both internal and publicly accessible data to generate actionable insights.

Key Responsibilities

The Chief will collaborate with academic institutions to extract lessons from historical successes and failures. Insights from international counterparts, particularly through our Trade Commissioners and the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) network, will also be invaluable.

This role is a cross-departmental initiative. The Industrial Strategy aligns with broader economic growth objectives. The Chief will work in close partnership with HM Treasury, especially with their Director General focused on growth, fostering existing coordination and cultivating a collective sense of responsibility across various prosperity departments. Effective collaboration will be crucial.

  • Proven ability to engage with senior business executives, demonstrating exceptional credibility and interpersonal skills.
  • Experience in navigating central government structures and formulating investment strategies to enhance productivity.
  • A collaborative leadership approach, skilled in transcending departmental boundaries and building alliances at all organizational levels.
  • A history of guiding high-performing teams in complex and uncertain environments.
  • Expertise in economic policy development through engagement with central government.
  • A strong visionary perspective, capable of utilizing data and historical precedents to pinpoint opportunities for innovative policy development.
