Job Title: Researcher (Casualty)

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Researcher to join our team at BBC Studios, working on the popular TV drama series Casualty.

About the Role

The successful candidate will be responsible for conducting thorough research on a wide range of topics, including medical procedures, police procedures, and social issues. They will work closely with the script and story teams to ensure that all storylines and scripts are accurate and consistent.

Main Responsibilities
  • Assist the Producers, Script Editors, and Writers in testing potential stories and character developments for accuracy, credibility, and consistency.
  • Conduct in-depth research on medical matters and controversial subject matters, covering topics such as the law, emergency services, and moral and political issues.
  • Be the point of contact for medical advisors and liaise with Script Editors and Writers as necessary regarding medical content.
  • Read all allocated scripts to ensure continuity of research in storylines and accuracy of factually based dialogue.
  • Have an awareness of wider issues on certain subject matters and understanding of how social topics can overlap.
  • Attend script meetings well-prepared to identify research problems and present solutions.
  • Generate story ideas from research sources and undertake research visits when necessary.
  • Work closely with Casualty's paramedic, emergency medicine, and nursing advisors on scripts and story ideas.
  • Maintain a relevant and up-to-date research archive.
  • Provide general research support to Writers.
  • Establish and maintain an appropriate library resource of professional periodicals.
  • Closely co-operate and communicate with production teams, including Script and Story Producers, Script Editors, Writers, and Design departments.
  • Attend commissioning, first draft, and medical meetings, as well as any further meetings on scripts as required.
  • Assist the Director and production team with background research on topics for episodes.
  • Identify, establish, and maintain relationships with experts in specific fields and keep abreast of NHS developments through links with the Department of Health and trades unions.
Requirements
  • Experience as a Researcher for TV/Radio Drama and/or in other specialized fields, e.g., journalism.
  • Demonstrable experience of thorough case studies undertaken, reflecting a broadly based knowledge and familiarity with conventional and specialized sources of information and research techniques.
  • Experience of telling or supporting others to tell complex, authentic stories, and employing methods to ensure accuracy.
  • Demonstrable experience of prioritizing simultaneous workload deadlines in a fast-paced and volatile environment.
  • Ability to horizon scan potential problems and give examples of when this practice has resulted in a more efficient and smoother process.
  • Demonstrable understanding of and ability to interpret editorial intentions and contribute to the generation of ideas and resolution of script problems.
  • Experience of establishing and maintaining office and administration systems.
  • Ability to handle confidential information with tact and sensitivity.
  • Experience of working in a role requiring building and nurturing relationships with a range of stakeholders and contacts.
  • Informed interest in television drama production and especially Casualty.
Package Description

Length of contract: 12 Month FTC/Attachment

Band: B

Salary: £25-28,000

Location: Roath Lock Studios, Cardiff Bay

Please note that this is a standard Studios Production contract and potentially can involve up to 55 hours per week.
