Position Overview:

We are seeking an Automation Controls Specialist to join our dynamic Modification and Upgrades team, which plays a vital role in our ongoing customer support initiatives.

Our Modification & Upgrades division is essential in assisting operational automated material handling facilities in executing enhancement projects. The Automation Controls Specialist will be responsible for designing, implementing, and maintaining hardware and software solutions for modernization and upgrade initiatives.

Your primary duties will include delivering control solutions, encompassing software design and commissioning, while ensuring that the solutions align with the project's budget and timeline requirements.

Due to the nature of this role, travel to various client locations will be necessary to conduct site assessments and gain a comprehensive understanding of their requirements.

The main office is located in Wellingborough, but we offer flexible remote working arrangements to accommodate travel needs.


Key Responsibilities:
  • Develop control solutions for material handling projects, focusing on software design and commissioning.
  • Ensure that the solutions meet project specifications and are executed within budget and time constraints.
  • Understand the challenges of working on live sites and provide solutions that minimize disruptions to client operations while adhering to project guidelines.
  • Provide technical support, address system faults, and conduct investigations and fault rectification as needed.
  • Assist in the development and maintenance of departmental procedures and standards, fostering a culture of continuous improvement.
  • Create PLC software, including safety-compliant code.
  • Produce all relevant documentation, such as Functional Design Specifications, test specifications, and commissioning checklists.
  • Commission control systems on-site and support system integration commissioning activities.

Qualifications:
  • HNC or HND, or equivalent qualification, in electrical engineering or a related field.
  • Demonstrated experience in producing PLC software within an automated materials handling environment or similar sectors, such as manufacturing or production.
  • Prior experience in developing PLC software, including safety-compliant code.
  • Familiarity with Siemens Step 7/TIA is advantageous, but candidates with programming experience on other PLC platforms will also be considered.
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to collaborate effectively with multidisciplinary teams.
  • Valid UK Driving Licence and willingness to travel to client sites as required (approximately 50%).
  • Flexibility to work outside of standard hours to achieve project objectives.
