Overview:

As a key player in our organization, you will oversee the daily activities of the local operations team, ensuring that we operate within defined resources and budgets while adhering to company protocols and goals. Your leadership will be crucial in delivering operational safety and maintaining the quality of our train services.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead and inspire the local operations team, serving as a mentor and role model while effectively implementing company policies.
  • Act as the Rail Incident Officer (RIO) when necessary, establishing command structures and directing the restoration of services and infrastructure.
  • Build and sustain productive relationships with both internal and external stakeholders, including maintenance teams and train operating companies.
  • Manage local operational resources and budgets to ensure seamless train service delivery, particularly during disruptions.
  • Execute established delivery and contingency plans to optimize train performance.
  • Support the development of local emergency plans, ensuring consistency with route requirements.
  • Monitor maintenance activities proactively to enhance train service performance.
  • Oversee a controllable operational expenditure budget while adhering to procurement regulations.
  • Ensure compliance with procedures outlined in the Operations Manual, Rule Book, and relevant safety management systems.
  • Manage competency assessment processes for team members.
  • Direct resources in response to incidents affecting infrastructure, collaborating with Network Rail Control.
  • Coordinate with Network Rail Control and the Operations Manager to ensure effective real-time management of Mobile Operations Managers during service disruptions.
  • Specify, allocate, and maintain operational vehicles and response equipment, ensuring they are fit for purpose.
  • Operate signal boxes as required, if competent.

Qualifications and Skills:

Essential:

  • Proven ability to lead, manage, and develop teams.
  • Competency in relevant rules and regulations.
  • Capability to achieve assessor competence.
  • Ability to qualify as a Rail Incident Officer.
  • Strong decision-making skills and assertiveness.
  • Understanding of customer needs and expectations.
  • Effective organizational and planning skills.
  • Possession of a valid driving license.
  • Ability to gain necessary box competencies.

Desirable:

  • Familiarity with financial systems and budget management.
  • Commercial awareness.
  • Proficiency in IT, particularly in report writing and corporate information management.
  • General knowledge of business improvement processes.
  • Understanding of the railway industry structure and responsibilities.
  • Experience in handling employee relations issues.
  • Skills in investigatory processes, such as Root Cause Analysis.

Note: Relevant competencies must be attained prior to undertaking specific activities.
