Position Overview

The Financial Times is seeking a European banking journalist to report on one of the most dynamic and significant sectors in the financial landscape.

European financial institutions are facing challenges from better-capitalized competitors in the US, an increasingly stringent regulatory framework, and persistently low interest rates that significantly affect profitability. Concurrently, the competition for top talent is intensifying, particularly in light of recent regulatory changes.

In this role, you will be expected to uncover news related to potential mergers and acquisitions as executives strive to enhance efficiency and scale. Additionally, the position will involve analyzing the rising influence of non-bank financial entities and their competitive strategies against traditional banking institutions.

The ideal candidate will possess a blend of financial acumen and analytical capabilities to evaluate various strategic approaches and identify emerging leaders and laggards in the industry, particularly in the aftermath of the financial crisis.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Collaborate closely with the dedicated financial services team in London.
  • Coordinate with colleagues across major European financial hubs.
  • Engage with our audience through various digital platforms and events.
  • Develop visual content and explore collaborative opportunities with the Visual and Data Journalism team.
  • Participate in weekend shifts as part of the team’s schedule.

  • Strong capability to produce comprehensive analyses.
  • Proficiency in reporting across multiple digital channels.
