Bristol, Bristol, United Kingdom Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government Full time

Position Overview

As the Director of the Grenfell Memorial Programme, you will be instrumental in leading the recovery efforts following the Grenfell tragedy. Your primary focus will be to implement a memorial shaped by the voices of the bereaved, survivors, and the local community, ensuring that it serves as a lasting tribute to those who lost their lives.

We strongly encourage individuals from ethnic minority backgrounds and those with disabilities to apply, as well as candidates from regions outside of London, to promote diversity at this level within the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government. Please be aware that this role will necessitate regular travel to London.

Key Responsibilities

In your capacity as the Grenfell Memorial Programme Director, you will report to the Director of Community and Memorial, serving as the Senior Responsible Owner (SRO) for the Grenfell Site and Memorial Programme. Your responsibilities will include:

  • Overseeing the secure management and operation of the Grenfell Tower site.
  • Preparing the site for future use, contingent upon decisions regarding the tower.
  • Leading the execution of the memorial project, ensuring comprehensive programme management across various workstreams, including design, construction, and community engagement.
  • Maintaining active communication with the community, employing trauma-informed approaches as decisions are made.
  • Facilitating a seamless transition to a community-accepted body once the site is ready for its long-term future.
  • Providing assurance to senior officials and stakeholders regarding the Programme's delivery as a Major Project within the Government's portfolio.
  • Collaborating effectively with a range of stakeholders, including contractors and public authorities.

Accountability and Leadership

As the Grenfell Memorial Programme Director, you will be accountable for:

  • Strategic and operational management of the Grenfell Tower site, ensuring expert guidance is sought as necessary.
  • Implementing a transparent and sensitive approach that fosters trust among the bereaved, survivors, and the local community.
  • Delivering the Grenfell Site & Memorial Programme in alignment with community aspirations, managing performance, and addressing risks and issues proactively.
  • Providing high-quality advice and assurance to senior officials and stakeholders regarding the Programme's progress.
  • Leading a diverse, delivery-focused team, including civil servants and contractors, to achieve Programme objectives.
  • Creating a collaborative environment that promotes high performance and effective partnerships.

Candidate Profile

This pivotal role requires a strategic thinker with the ability to navigate complex, sensitive environments. The ideal candidate will possess:

  • Extensive experience in programme and project delivery within the construction or built environment sectors.
  • A proven track record of leading initiatives in sensitive contexts, with a strong focus on stakeholder engagement.
  • Expertise in cost management and risk assessment within a governmental framework.
  • Strong leadership skills, capable of motivating teams and maintaining high performance under challenging circumstances.
  • Excellent communication abilities, with experience engaging with senior officials and community representatives.
  • A commitment to fostering trust and transparency in government operations.

Benefits

In addition to a competitive salary, the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government offers a comprehensive benefits package, including contributions to a defined benefit pension scheme, tailored learning and development opportunities, flexible working arrangements, and a commitment to fostering an inclusive and diverse workplace culture.
