Job Purpose

The aim of this fellowship is to cultivate, direct, and disseminate groundbreaking independent research that aligns with the College of Medical, Veterinary & Life Sciences (MVLS) vision for 2033. Throughout the fellowship, you will also work towards establishing a comprehensive academic career by developing, delivering, and enhancing educational offerings; exploring impactful opportunities; and engaging in academic administration.

Main Duties and Responsibilities
1. To spearhead and establish a research portfolio that is strategically aligned by formulating research initiatives and grant proposals, while overseeing the management and execution of research plans and funding.
2. To produce research publications in prestigious journals and/or conferences, achieving world-leading quality (equivalent to 4* rating in UK REF2021).
3. To showcase research outcomes at prominent national and international conferences, seminars, and meetings relevant to your research themes.
4. To actively engage in College/School/Theme activities and/or cross-College research initiatives and networks to bolster your work, strategic objectives, and research visibility.
5. To mentor and support postgraduate research students and secure funding for their studentships from various sources.
6. To create a teaching portfolio that supports undergraduate and postgraduate education and assessment as required by the College/School/Theme, with the expectation of building towards a full teaching load during the fellowship.
7. To develop impact initiatives by establishing research and/or educational partnerships with industry, influencing public policy, and engaging externally for societal benefit.
8. To undertake administrative and management duties associated with research, teaching, and impact initiatives.
9. Engage in personal, professional, and career development to enhance both specialized and transferable skills in line with your career aspirations.
10. Perform any other reasonable duties as assigned by the Head of School.

For appointment at Grade 9:
11. Execute the aforementioned duties with greater independence, leadership, and accountability, particularly concerning research funding, collaboration, publication, and teaching.
12. Act as principal investigator or project leader on significant research projects with a portfolio of high-quality and impactful research activities and publications.
13. Develop a strategic approach to integrating learning technologies across the Subject/School and College to enhance course delivery, organization, feedback, and assessment in campus-based, blended, and online formats.
14. Lead the creation of inclusive and innovative teaching, learning, and assessment methods that address the needs of a diverse student body, taking appropriate responsibility for managing associated cultural changes and staff support and development.
15. Supervise individual student projects at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels to ensure their effective development and assist with challenges (e.g., learning support/issues).

These responsibilities are not exhaustive but represent key tasks that may be reasonably expected.

Knowledge, Qualifications, Skills and Experience

Knowledge/Qualifications
A1 Scottish Credit Qualification Framework level 12 (PhD) in a relevant discipline with a growing reputation in research within the subject area.
A2 Membership of a relevant professional organization, where applicable.
A3 Current knowledge of research issues and a solid understanding of the broader disciplinary field.

For appointment to higher grades, the following criteria should also be met.

For appointment at Grade 9:
A4 A well-established reputation in research and/or teaching within the subject area to foster new knowledge and understanding within the field.
A5 Ongoing engagement with current practices and development of expertise and knowledge within the subject area.

Skills
C1 Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to convey complex or conceptual ideas to a diverse audience of staff and students.
C2 Ability to collaborate with both internal and external stakeholders, leading teams in a professional manner aligned with University values.
C3 A strong commitment to high-quality teaching and the ability to engage students to inspire learning and provide pastoral care.

For appointment to higher grades, the above criteria should also be met.

For appointment at Grade 9:
C4 Ability to demonstrate independent thought to generate internationally leading research and secure substantial research funding.
C5 Excellent influencing and collaboration skills to help shape the research agenda of the academic community and funders.
C6 Proven track record of developing and delivering exceptional commitment to high-quality teaching, inspiring students, and fostering a positive learning environment.

Experience
E1 A minimum of 3 years of post-doctoral experience (or equivalent).
E2 A track record of playing a significant role (PI/Co-I or otherwise distinctive contribution) in securing research funding and leading the management of successful applications through the preparation of research bids and tenders.
E3 Demonstrable history of published high-quality research outputs.
E4 Experience contributing to an inclusive and collaborative research culture and promoting equality, diversity, and inclusion.
E5 Experience working on interdisciplinary research projects or with interdisciplinary teams.

For appointment to higher grades, the above criteria should also be met.

Desirable
F1 Experience in impact activities that translate research and teaching efforts into external engagement.
F2 Experience contributing to teaching activities.
F3 Experience in financial planning and management of project resources.

For appointment at Grade 9:
E6 Evidence of a significant contribution to the academic community through leadership roles nationally and internationally (e.g., shaping research agendas, advising review panels and funders).
E7 Established track record of successfully securing funding for research projects, as appropriate for the area of specialization as a principal investigator.
E8 Internationally recognized excellence and reputation in the subject area.
