About Bakkavor.

We are a leading name in the fresh prepared food sector, with a workforce of approximately 18,500 across the UK, US, and China. Our innovative products, including meals, salads, desserts, pizza, and bread, are supplied to major grocery retailers. This role is situated at our Bakkavor Desserts facility in Newark, specializing in the production of chilled desserts such as trifles, cream cakes, and choux pastries. Our site employs over 1,900 individuals and is one of eight manufacturing locations within the Bakkavor Bakery sector in the UK.

Role Responsibilities.

We are looking for a proactive and hands-on Hygiene Operations Leader to take full responsibility for the Hygiene department, ensuring that hygiene, microbiological, and health & safety standards are upheld across the Bakkavor Desserts Newark facility. The ideal candidate will possess a strong background in hygiene management within the food industry, with a focus on health and safety regulations and COSHH compliance, and will bring innovative ideas to enhance team performance.

Key Duties Include:

  • Driving and implementing significant improvements in cleaning efficiency and effectiveness.
  • Leading the hygiene management team to achieve sustainability through effective coaching.
  • Coordinating the hygiene strategy for the site with a planning horizon of up to six months.
  • Facilitating customer visits and liaising with vendors.
  • Promoting a robust health and safety culture throughout the site.
  • Managing and achieving key performance indicators (KPIs) across the facility.
  • Leading thorough investigations aimed at microbiological enhancements.
  • Overseeing staff training, development, and wellbeing within the department.
  • Utilizing effective root cause analysis to implement SMART actions for improved outcomes.
  • Communicating hygiene performance and plans with other departments, such as Engineering, to optimize results.
  • Managing the budget for labor and cleaning/chemicals, along with future forecasting.
  • Serving as the site lead for interim cleaning standards.

Candidate Profile.

Experience and Skills:

  • Proven experience in leading and managing a large hygiene team within a complex chilled food environment.
  • Health & Safety qualifications.
  • Extensive leadership experience.
  • A structured and logical approach to problem-solving.
  • Strong analytical and change management skills.
  • The ability to identify and drive continuous improvement initiatives.
  • High energy and the ability to perform under pressure.
  • Excellent communication skills, capable of conveying complex information clearly to all levels of the organization.

Desirable Attributes:

  • Experience as a HACCP team member.
  • Knowledge of microbiological standards.
  • Experience in design and build projects.
  • Project management skills.
