RAND Europe is seeking an experienced Research Leader to join our Defence and Security research group in Cambridge. As a key member of our team, you will lead and support the delivery of a diverse portfolio of research projects, focusing on emerging technologies in a defence context, particularly AI and foresight methods.

About the Role

This is an exciting opportunity to contribute to our growing portfolio of work on emerging technologies, shaping sound answers to pressing societal challenges. You will work closely with our team to deliver high-quality research, develop business development initiatives, and build relationships with funders and collaborators.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead and support the delivery of research projects, expanding into new areas of work and contributing to our thought leadership on emerging technology policy issues.
  • Mentor research staff, facilitating the development of project management and methodological skills.
  • Help ensure that RAND Europe's research has a positive impact within policy communities and the wider world.
  • Contribute to business development, securing funding for research and consultancy tasks, and supporting others in doing so.
  • Build networks and contacts with funders and collaborators, coordinating and managing business development initiatives.
Requirements
  • Demonstrable experience in emerging technology, AI, and foresight policy research, with proven expertise in leading and managing relevant topics.
  • Experience of using futures and foresight methods in emerging technology research, with the ability to articulate the value of futures and foresight research in this field.
  • Experience of winning and delivering research projects for UK, EU, or international defence organisations and funders.
  • Excellent analytical, writing, and presentation skills, with the ability to communicate effectively with clients and varied internal and external audiences.
  • Strong project leadership and management experience, including experience of budget preparation and people management.
Personal Qualities
  • Commercially astute, analytical thinker with the ability to see issues strategically and at a practical level from a variety of perspectives.
  • Networking and sales presentation skills to build relationships, facilitate joint decision making, and cultivate relationships with potential funders and collaborators.
  • Hands-on, team player with a strong commitment to rigorous and high-quality research, customer service, and the ability to manage multiple projects and tasks, and work to tight deadlines.
