About the Role

We are seeking an experienced materials scientist to join our polymer composite materials team at the National Physical Laboratory in Teddington. This is a unique opportunity to work with a team of internationally recognized scientists and engineers, developing new test methods and making measurements of a unique nature.

Key Responsibilities
  • Contribute to the delivery of our National Measurement System (NMS) funded research programme, focusing on developing a metrology infrastructure for polymer composites.
  • Deliver and take ownership of aspects of work focused on metrology for energy efficient manufacturing processes, circularity of materials, and high value products, and mechanical, thermal, and physical performance evaluation of existing, emerging, and new formats of materials under challenging environments.
  • Undertake projects for a wide range of external customers, including writing scientific reports and peer-reviewed papers, and presenting at conferences and internal meetings.
  • Develop bespoke mechanical testing techniques for the laboratory and learn standardised testing methods.
About You

We are looking for a positive and self-motivated materials scientist with a special interest in characterisation of polymer composites using a wide range of advanced measurement techniques. You will be responsible for experimental work in the laboratory, data exploration, written reports/papers, presentations, and customer-facing activities. You will solve problems in the laboratory and ensure timely delivery of research and commercial contracts for industrial customers.

Requirements
  • A degree in engineering or materials science.
  • The desire to make a research theme your own and the ambition to become a nationally/internationally known materials scientist.
  • Confident in mechanical design and an ability to visualise practical solutions to complex engineering problems.
  • Practical skills such as design and build, use of hand tools, drills, etc.
  • Familiarity with Solidworks or a similar 3D CAD package.
  • Familiarity with different types of materials and basic materials testing techniques.
  • Ability to work independently and within a team.
  • Proficient in use of office-based IT software systems such as Word, Excel, etc.
  • Flexibility to learn new skills and keen to learn.
