Position Overview

Join our esteemed maternity unit, one of the largest in the Midlands, where we facilitate around 8,400 births each year, catering to a diverse community. Our team comprises over 400 midwives, 34 consultants, and a variety of professionals including anaesthetists, sonographers, and neonatal specialists.

The successful candidate will spearhead the multidisciplinary governance team, ensuring the effective application of a thorough and systematic approach to clinical governance. A solid understanding of safety principles, quality assurance, and the governance framework relevant to maternity services is crucial, alongside the ability to evaluate national standards and formulate action plans. Familiarity with quality improvement and assurance principles is essential.

Collaboration with multidisciplinary professionals will be key to ensuring the integration of information and insights across the service, division, and trust, thereby supporting our teams in delivering exceptional service within a busy multi-site maternity environment.

As a distinguished leader with comprehensive knowledge of governance and assurance mechanisms, you will foster confidence and innovation among our dedicated workforce. A genuine passion for governance and excellence in maternity care is required, along with the capability to provide statutory and regulatory assurance regarding the quality and safety of the services we provide.

Main Responsibilities

The primary objective of this role is to ensure that maternity services have established guidelines, processes, and procedures that promote ongoing compliance with all locally and nationally recognized quality standards based on the clinical governance framework. Responsibilities include:

  • Leading the monitoring of standards across various clinical governance, clinical effectiveness, and patient safety activities, in collaboration with other multidisciplinary professionals and functional heads within the Maternity and Quality and Safety Team, while managing these teams across all sites.
  • Partnering with the senior obstetric and midwifery teams to advance the broader Maternity leadership, operational, governance, and strategic initiatives.

This role will oversee the strategic and operational delivery of all quality assurance aspects related to clinical governance in maternity, ensuring a focus on safety and demonstrating that effective governance practices are understood and implemented across all professional groups within the maternity service.

Qualifications

Essential

  • Registered Midwife
  • Master's level degree in a related healthcare discipline or substantial experiential equivalence.
  • Evidence of ongoing professional development.
  • Recognized qualification in quality assurance, compliance, and governance or relevant experience.

Experience

Essential

  • Understanding of safety principles, quality assurance, and governance frameworks relevant to maternity services.
  • Ability to analyze national standards and develop actionable plans.
  • Knowledge of quality improvement and assurance principles.
  • Highly developed specialist knowledge supported by theoretical and practical experience.
  • Evidence of multidisciplinary collaboration.
  • Experience in formulating, disseminating, and implementing policies and guidelines.
  • Service development experience, including delivering clinical quality improvements and successful service changes.
  • Ability to produce high-quality specialist knowledge in clinical governance and risk management.
  • Experience in clinical research and involvement in committees external to the Trust.
  • Experience in both hospital and community settings.
