About the Role

We are seeking a highly skilled CFD R&D Engineer to join our team at McLaren F1 Team. As a key member of our CFD Methodology group, you will play a critical role in driving the development of our CFD tools and methodologies.

Key Responsibilities
  • Manage and deliver improvements to CFD methodology and workflows, collaborating with cross-functional teams to drive innovation and efficiency.
  • Perform advanced CFD R&D activities, including supporting the Aerodynamic Development and HPC teams, to drive the development of our racing cars.
  • Champion and propose various tools used in CFD technology, developing in-depth understanding and techniques to address limitations and push for continuous improvement.
  • Develop a high level of understanding of HPC hardware, software, novel numerical methods, and correlation, and use this knowledge to liaise effectively with the HPC, Software, and Development/Analysis teams.
  • Take ownership of a large codebase, contributing to its maintenance and development.
  • Develop a high level of understanding of aerodynamic performance development and how CFD contributions can be used to make our cars faster, and use this knowledge to deliver effective and targeted CFD methodology support and knowledge to impact race car performance.
Requirements
  • Strong mathematical background, with expertise in linear algebra, partial differential equations, and Finite volume/element/high order numerical methods.
  • In-depth knowledge of CFD modelling and expertise in at least two of the following areas: CFD solver development, CFD process automation, CFD applications.
  • Experience in CFD within the context of Aerodynamic development, or experience of data analysis frameworks.
  • Experience in using simulations tools/packages in industrial applications.
  • Knowledge and experience with OpenFOAM are preferred.
  • Strong coding skills in object-oriented programming languages (C++, Python, or others) as well as version control system.
  • Experience of planning and organising technical projects to pre-agreed targets, working collaboratively with other team members.
