Technical Specialist

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Technical Specialist to join our team at the University of Glasgow. The successful candidate will provide in-depth technical expertise and support to academic and student service users within the specified discipline or assigned research project.
Main Responsibilities- Technical Support: Provide expert technical support to service users, including troubleshooting, maintenance, and repair of technical equipment and systems.
- Technical Knowledge: Develop, create, and test new equipment, systems, procedures, protocols, models, and techniques to enhance the learning experience and/or contribute to the delivery of research objectives.
- Technical Planning: Design, plan, and organize technical activities to meet the needs of service users within agreed timescales.
- Technical Standards: Monitor technical standards, advise on improvements, and implement and evaluate changes to existing protocols as required.
- Data Analysis: Collect, analyze, and interpret data using standard procedures, ensuring accurate records are kept and databases are updated accordingly.
- Training and Guidance: Advise, train, and provide guidance to service users on the best application and operation of technical resources.
- Inventory Management: Maintain appropriate stock levels, including preparation of specialized media and samples as required, and purchase consumables and supplies within defined budget.
- Health and Safety: Ensure safe implementation and ongoing storage of potentially hazardous materials, and support the completion of risk assessments and COSHH assessments.
- Supervision: Supervise staff, including allocating work and monitoring progress and outputs, where relevant.
- Administration: Undertake general administration tasks, including recording student attendance and collating student assessment marks for feedback to the academic lead, where relevant.
- Teamwork: Collaborate with colleagues, participate in team meetings and discussions, and contribute to the wider College/Institute/School activities as required.
- Professional Development: Keep up to date with advances in the relevant discipline and apply this knowledge to technical activities to further enhance the learning experience and/or contribute to the delivery of research aims.
- Qualifications: A1 Scottish Credit and Qualification Framework level 7 (Advanced Higher / Scottish vocational Qualification level 3, Higher National Certificate) or equivalent, and experience of personal development in a similar role.
- Knowledge and Expertise: Detailed technical knowledge and expertise in the relevant discipline, up-to-date knowledge of relevant laboratory Health and Safety legislation, and a BSc Degree or equivalent in the relevant discipline (desirable).
- Skills: Demonstrable in-depth technical skills aligned to the specified discipline or assigned research project, significant IT skills, including proficient user of relevant specialist and standard software packages, well-developed analytical and problem-solving capability, and excellent teamworking skills.
- Experience: Significant relevant work experience within a similar environment, including evidence of previous professional development, experience of understanding and interpreting the technical requirements of service users, and experience of planning and organizing own workload to meet the needs of service users.
