Position Overview

As the Senior User Research Lead within the Department for Work and Pensions, you will be responsible for directing research initiatives within Retirement Services. Your role will ensure that established best practices are adhered to, and that high-caliber research outputs are consistently achieved. You will play a pivotal role in shaping research strategies at both the organizational and programmatic levels, advocating for a variety of user research methodologies to effectively meet user requirements.

Key Responsibilities
  • Design and implement comprehensive research programs, selecting suitable research methodologies that align with product and program roadmaps.
  • Guarantee that user research within Retirement Services is conducted efficiently and effectively, meeting the strategic vision and quality standards of the department.
  • Collaborate with senior colleagues and project teams to provide guidance on projects, promoting standards and insights derived from user research while influencing decision-making processes to incorporate user research considerations.
  • Lead teams in analyzing research data and synthesizing findings, prioritizing actionable insights to be integrated into the program backlog.
  • Stay informed about the latest best practices and methodologies in user research, providing leadership and expertise while fostering innovative approaches within the practice.
  • Advocate for appropriate resource allocation for User Researchers, acting as a Subject Matter Expert on resource needs to ensure successful outcomes.
  • Promote a user-centric design culture within the department, ensuring that decision-making and design rationales are grounded in user needs to enhance clarity and simplicity.
  • Engage proactively with stakeholders across government and relevant external organizations to shape service vision and priorities.
Candidate Profile

To be successful in this role, you should demonstrate experience aligned with the following essential criteria:
  • Extensive background as a User Researcher or in related research fields, with a strong grasp of research ethics, safeguarding, and data management.
  • Proven track record in building and leading research teams, with an expert understanding of diverse research methodologies.
  • Strong analytical skills to identify patterns and connections within research findings.
  • Expertise in designing, facilitating, and analyzing a broad spectrum of research using various methods to develop a comprehensive understanding of users.
  • Proficiency in user-centered design practices and their integration into agile workflows.
  • Experience advocating for inclusive research practices that engage diverse user groups.
  • Capability in developing skills and competencies within large, complex organizations in both public and private sectors.
