This position presents a unique opportunity for an individual with expertise in UK Ministry of Defence (MoD) Safety and Environmental protocols. The focus of this role is on a program that supports individuals in critical situations, where your contributions will be essential in ensuring a safe and compliant system for our MoD clients.

Your key responsibilities will encompass:

  • Establishing and upholding project Safety and Environmental Management Systems for defence contracts, in alignment with current and future defence policies, legislation, and regulations. This includes the ongoing maintenance of a Safety and Environmental Management Plan (SEMP) throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Serving as the primary liaison for customer stakeholders, internal project teams, and integrated ecosystem members regarding all Safety and Environmental issues.
  • Developing, maintaining, and implementing the Safety and Environmental Management System (SEMS) for the assigned project, adhering to the latest Defence Safety and Environmental Policy, Legislation, and requirements, particularly the MOD Acquisition Safety and Environmental Management System (ASEMS).
  • Monitoring and reporting on progress towards safety and environmental objectives and targets as required.
  • Acting as the lead contact for all Safety and Environmental concerns with the customer stakeholders.
  • Providing guidance to the project and broader stakeholders on the viability of technical solutions to address safety risks and environmental impacts.
  • Conducting internal Safety and Environmental audits for the project and collaborating with ecosystem members and broader stakeholders.
  • Coordinating with appointed Independent Safety and Environmental Assessors (ISEAs) to facilitate audits and provide necessary project documentation.
  • Ensuring the timely delivery of Safety and Environmental Plans, Assessments, and reports in accordance with the SEMS and project timelines.
  • Maintaining up-to-date knowledge of the Defence Acquisition Safety and Environmental Management System (ASEMS) and relevant Defence Standards, Regulations, and Legislation.
  • Supporting Safety and Environmental Engineers in the preparation of Safety and Environmental Case Reports (SECRs) and in defining necessary supporting documents and assessments.
  • Planning and facilitating internal Safety and Environmental Working Groups and managing the execution of Project Safety and Environmental Panel (PSEP) Meetings on behalf of customer stakeholders.
  • Conducting Safety and Environmental Audits, both internally and with ecosystem members, including assisting independent auditors in their activities.
  • Investigating safety incidents and recommending improvements for the project.

Ideal candidates will possess:

  • Experience with e-Cassandra for the creation and upkeep of defence safety hazard logs.
  • Experience in environmental impact management.
  • A comprehensive understanding of the MOD Acquisition Safety and Environmental Management System (ASEMS), including:
    • Project Oriented Safety Management System (POSMS)
    • Project Oriented Environmental Management System (POEMS)
    • DEFSTAN 00-051, 00-055, 00-056
  • Knowledge of relevant Defence guidance, legislation, and regulations applicable to defence projects throughout the CADMID lifecycle, including:
    • JSP375, JSP418, JSP392
    • DSA03.DLSR.LSSR Defence Codes of Practice
    • DSA02.DLSR
  • Prior experience applying IEC 61508 and implementing Safety Integrity Levels (SILs) in systems.
  • Familiarity with Radiation Hazard (RADHAZ) management.
  • Experience managing Safety and Environmental aspects for electronic systems, particularly concerning Programmable Elements (PE).
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications.
  • Previous experience in delivering defence projects in accordance with ASEMS.
  • Due to the nature of this role, the successful candidate must be eligible to obtain Security Clearance for UK MoD work.
