Position Overview

The Midwifery Specialist for Preterm Care Services will collaborate within a multidisciplinary team to coordinate comprehensive care for women facing an elevated risk of preterm labor, whether suspected or confirmed, or those scheduled for a preterm delivery.

The ideal candidate will engage actively in both local and regional networks, contributing to educational initiatives and research aimed at enhancing the implementation of the Preterm Birth pathway. This role involves close collaboration with various stakeholders to co-create services that ensure equitable and supportive pathways for women and families utilizing maternity care.

This position is vital for the ongoing development and maintenance of our preterm birth services, ensuring that we uphold the highest standards of care for our patients.

The successful applicant will possess extensive knowledge of current national, regional, and local initiatives aimed at reducing preterm births, including relevant reports and guidelines.

The post holder will further develop their expertise in managing preterm pregnancy options and will oversee the creation of personalized care plans for a designated group of birthing individuals and their infants within a collaborative framework.

Job Responsibilities

This specialized role is tailored to meet the needs of pregnant women at high risk for premature birth, working closely with the Clinical Lead for preterm birth.

The role involves operating within the Preterm Birth service, supported by a multidisciplinary team capable of performing necessary procedures.

The Midwifery Specialist will provide expert guidance to both staff and women at risk of or who have previously experienced preterm births, facilitating effective care planning.

Responsibilities include monitoring pregnant women and their families through cervical length assessments and facilitating interventions aimed at preventing preterm births.

Additionally, the post holder will lead the implementation of relevant protocols and ensure compliance with established standards across perinatal services.

Oversight of service referrals, including in-utero transfer requests, will also be a key responsibility, ensuring that the preterm birth service adheres to required standards.

Essential Skills and Qualifications

Applicants must possess:

  • A degree in midwifery
  • Current registration as a midwife
  • Evidence of professional development within the last year
  • Teaching and assessing qualifications
  • Formal mentorship qualifications

Experience in continuous clinical practice within a preterm birth service, participation in audits, and evidence of leadership development are also essential.

Successful candidates will demonstrate excellent communication skills, the ability to work autonomously, and a commitment to evidence-based practice.
