About the Role

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Consultant Microbiologist to join our team at The Royal Wolverhampton NHS Trust. As a key member of our microbiology department, you will play a vital role in providing expert advice and guidance on infection prevention and control, antimicrobial stewardship, and laboratory services.

Key Responsibilities
  • Liaise with clinicians, hospital staff, and general practitioners to diagnose, manage, and prevent infections in collaboration with existing Consultant Microbiologists.
  • Support the Director of Infection Prevention and Control in maintaining high standards of infection control and prevention across the trust.
  • Authorise and interpret laboratory results, ensuring accuracy and quality.
  • Collaborate with the Clinical Lead and clinical governance committee to ensure the microbiology service is cost-effective and clinically relevant.
  • Provide infection prevention and control advice to the trust and wider community, and assist in implementing infection prevention policies.
  • Work closely with the UK-HSA West Midlands Health Protection Team and Environmental Health Officers to manage and prevent communicable diseases.
  • Undertake on-call consultative microbiology duties, including weeknight and weekend on-call, and participate in the planning of pathology services.
  • Participate in audit activities, training of junior medical staff, and postgraduate teaching programs.
Person Specification
  • Higher Level training in Clinical Microbiology, including infection prevention, and a CCT in Microbiology or dual CCT in Microbiology & Infectious Diseases.
  • GMC registration and FRCPath or equivalent qualification.
  • Ability to work well in a multidisciplinary team, maintain good relations with contacts, and demonstrate audit and implementation of change following audit.
  • Desirable: recent evidence of research and development activity, understanding of and ability to demonstrate strategic influence, collaborative working, and drive for improvement, and knowledge of principles of antimicrobial stewardship.
