Job Summary

We are seeking a creative and confident Media Communications Specialist to join our busy and supportive media team at the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government. As an Assistant Press Officer, you will develop media skills to plan and deliver impactful announcements for our key policies, across traditional media channels and on social media.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage the department's media planning spreadsheet, assessing incoming information from media teams and No10 to keep the planning spreadsheet up to date
  • Provide clear information to media teams and policy teams following discussions with No10
  • Draft engaging and concise social media posts and media statements
  • Produce accurate and articulate media monitoring products for the department
  • Receive, log and respond to enquiries from journalists, verbally guiding journalists on stories where necessary
  • Identify news stories that require reactive government comment to counter incorrect reporting and proactive insertion of the department's voice to promote the government's agenda
  • Generate creative ideas for news stories and social media content for the department

Requirements

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • A talent for writing creative, eye-catching and persuasive copy
  • Curiosity and an interest in the media landscape and current affairs
  • The ability to confidently engage with people - such as journalists, ministers and members of the public
  • An ability to quickly learn new tools, contribute new ideas and learn new approaches to delivering communications
  • Comfortable working in the office, on location and remotely, with a minimum of three days in the office and regular travel to London required
