Position Overview

The Cancer Services division at West Hertfordshire Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust is on the lookout for a dedicated Clinical Nurse Specialist to enhance our Acute Oncology Service (AOS). This role is integral to our team, working closely with the Acute Oncology Advanced Nurse Practitioner.

We seek a seasoned and driven professional to aid in the growth of our AOS service, aiming to elevate the quality of care provided to our patients.

This position presents a unique opportunity to contribute to the advancement and expansion of our service, assist in implementing a novel care model, and provide training and support to both the tumour site teams and Emergency Care staff.

Key Responsibilities

Collaborating with the ANP and clinical lead for Acute Oncology, the successful candidate will spearhead the clinical management of patients presenting with acute issues related to their cancer, treatment side effects, or new cancer diagnoses. This includes managing patients with unknown primary cancers.

This role will be crucial in developing, promoting, and delivering a new service model, with ongoing education for colleagues at all levels being a central focus.

The post holder will demonstrate a high degree of autonomy and possess strong leadership capabilities. Exceptional communication skills are essential, as the role involves conveying complex and sensitive information.

Job Responsibilities

The AOS Clinical Nurse Specialist will collaborate with the ANP to conduct assessments, implement patient care plans, and provide guidance for patients presenting with acute complications stemming from their cancer or treatment.

Qualifications and Experience

Essential

  • Registered General Nurse (RGN) qualification
  • Teaching qualification (e.g., ENB 998) or substantial experience
  • Degree-level education
  • Relevant post-registration qualifications in oncology, haematology, or palliative care
  • Evidence of recent professional development

Desirable

  • Master’s level education or in progress
  • Clinical Examination Module at Level 6/7 or willingness to pursue
  • Psychological support training at Level 2
  • Advanced communication skills

Knowledge and Skills

Essential

  • Experience in healthcare with staff management responsibilities
  • Current knowledge of cancer, palliative care, and end-of-life issues
  • Significant post-registration experience in oncology
  • Understanding of patient and caregiver challenges and their role in service enhancement
  • Experience across various care settings
  • Evidence of innovation and change management
  • Familiarity with oncological emergencies

  • Knowledge of achieving world-class cancer outcomes

Experience

  • Experience in oncology or palliative care, with a minimum of Band 6 experience in an acute setting
  • Teaching and mentoring skills for nurses and patients

  • Capability to collaborate with diverse professional and cultural organizations
  • Advanced clinical skills in managing complex care scenarios
