About the Agency:
The Commonwealth of Virginia's Department of Juvenile Justice (DJJ) is dedicated to safeguarding the community by equipping youth involved with the court system to become productive citizens. DJJ prioritizes public safety through effective interventions that enhance the lives of young individuals, while also fortifying families and communities across the state.
About the Position:
In this capacity, the selected individual will apply best practices in overseeing and ensuring the safety of juveniles within a secure residential environment by actively supervising frontline personnel.
Key Responsibilities Include:
1. Conducting thorough inspections and searches of communal areas and perimeters to uphold safety, security, and a healthy environment.
2. Providing direct oversight to Juvenile Correctional Services (JCS) staff within the designated area of responsibility on campus.
3. Completing all necessary administrative and program documentation (including timesheets, leave requests, incident reports, logbook entries, and various forms) accurately and in a timely manner.
4. Assisting in the on-the-job training of new JCS staff and offering ongoing coaching to all JCS personnel.
Additional Information:
Multiple positions will be filled from this announcement. Candidates selected for this role will undergo a background investigation and pre-employment drug screening.
Training Requirements:
The incumbent must complete the mandated training and certifications set forth by the Department of Juvenile Justice.
Public Interaction:
This position requires direct, face-to-face engagement with the public, including staff and juveniles in care, necessitating in-person work with youth and their families.
Minimum Qualifications:
Extensive supervisory experience in a secure residential environment. Familiarity with safety, security, and crisis intervention protocols. Capability to employ appropriate restraint techniques, utilize security tools and equipment, and provide first aid. Proficiency in supervising and interacting with juvenile offenders while serving as a constructive role model. Proven ability to communicate effectively with the public, staff, and juveniles; maintain accurate records and documentation; prepare reports; quickly assess situations; and take appropriate actions.
Additional Considerations:
Progressively responsible experience in corrections or law enforcement, with a portion of that experience at a supervisory level.
