Position Overview

We are pleased to announce a permanent full-time opportunity for a dedicated nurse to become part of our transfusion team as a Clinical Transfusion Education Specialist.

This role emphasizes the importance of transfusion training and education, ensuring both staff support and patient safety are prioritized.

Responsibilities include the management of educational resources, incident support, and auditing for all professionals engaged in transfusion processes at The Christie NHS FT, including partnerships and satellite locations as necessary.

Key Responsibilities

We seek a candidate who can work flexibly until 8 PM and dedicate 80% of their time to clinical duties:

- Coordinate and oversee transfusion training initiatives.

- Design, plan, and deliver educational sessions for both internal and external audiences.

- Effectively manage time and scheduling to align with the transfusion service requirements.

- Conduct practical and theoretical training sessions, including assessments.

- Provide support to clinical staff and facilitate practical exposure.

- Assist in the transfusion audit calendar and engage in quality improvement projects.

- Offer education related to incidents and errors.

- Oversee the management of educational materials.

The Christie is recognized as one of Europe's premier cancer treatment centers, serving over 60,000 patients annually. Based in Manchester, we cater to a vast population across Greater Manchester and Cheshire, while also receiving referrals from various regions across the country. Our services include radiotherapy through one of the largest departments globally, chemotherapy on-site and at 14 additional hospitals, specialized surgical interventions for complex and rare cancers, and a comprehensive range of diagnostic and support services. We are also at the forefront of cancer research, having achieved world-first breakthroughs for over a century. Our early clinical trial unit is among the largest in Europe, conducting over 300 trials each year. Cancer research conducted in Manchester, primarily on The Christie site, has been officially recognized as the best in the UK.

The Transfusion Team comprises a Haematology Consultant Transfusion Lead, two Transfusion Practitioners with nursing backgrounds, a clinical educational administrator, and two Biomedical Scientists. We are a cohesive team that meets regularly to uphold our terms of reference and collaborate closely to ensure a safe transfusion service.

Responsibilities Breakdown

Clinical Duties

  • Support practitioners at all levels in developing and maintaining safe transfusion practices.
  • Dedicate at least 80% of time to clinical support within the healthcare setting.
  • Prepare, coordinate, and facilitate teaching sessions and study days.
  • Develop clinical assessments and assist practitioners in completing their evaluations.
  • Maintain and oversee the transfusion training register, ultimately leading educational efforts in transfusion.
  • Provide regular updates and support to clinical areas regarding compliance.
  • Facilitate and support practical exposure in clinical settings.
  • Schedule necessary study sessions in a timely manner.
  • Deliver one-on-one training as needed.
  • Foster a safe and supportive environment for all staff levels.
  • Collaborate closely with trust clinical educators and transfusion link nurses to ensure a secure service.
  • Assist transfusion practitioners with clinically based audits and quality improvement initiatives.
  • Provide support to practitioners involved in transfusion incidents or investigations.
  • Evaluate and support the implementation of new equipment within the trust.
  • Identify and address areas of concern promptly, escalating as appropriate.

Managerial Duties

  • Operate within the transfusion team and autonomously to fulfill the trust-wide and partnership transfusion service requirements.
  • Manage the transfusion training database and systems, providing updates to Transfusion Practitioners and clinical areas.
  • Assist in editing and updating policies and standard operating procedures related to transfusion.
  • Organize time and scheduling to meet the transfusion service needs of the trust.
  • Participate in trust educational meetings and committees.
  • Manage and maintain educational materials for training purposes.
