Director of Clinical Physics Services

The Director of Clinical Physics Services is pivotal in enhancing and managing the delivery of clinical services within our healthcare organization, collaborating with various system partners. We seek a dynamic and seasoned leader capable of infusing enthusiasm and focus into Clinical Physics operations. The successful applicant will be an integral member of the senior leadership team within the Clinical Services Division, working closely with the divisional leadership to ensure the safe, high-quality, and efficient provision of services across:

  1. Radiation Safety
  2. Radiotherapy Physics
  3. Nuclear Medicine Physics
  4. Clinical Engineering
  5. Medical Engineering
  6. MRI Physics & Vascular Clinical Physics Research

Main Responsibilities

The Director of Clinical Physics Services will provide strategic operational leadership for designated services within the Clinical Services Division across our network of hospitals. This role involves establishing effective systems and processes that empower staff to deliver high-quality clinical care, uphold governance standards, and advance the service improvement agenda to enhance operational efficiency and effectiveness.

The Director will lead a multidisciplinary team of healthcare scientists, focusing on achieving the priorities and objectives set forth by the Clinical Director and Divisional Director of Operations across the following domains:

  • Responsive: Services are organized to meet patient needs effectively
  • Safe: Safeguarding staff and patients from harm
  • Effective: Ensuring care and treatment yield positive patient outcomes

The post holder will be accountable for the overall performance of the team and services, ensuring alignment with national and local healthcare priorities, maintaining clinical quality, ensuring patient safety, adhering to regulatory standards, and enhancing patient experience.

Qualifications

Essential:

  • Doctoral level degree or relevant senior-level experience
  • Master's or equivalent postgraduate qualification or relevant experience
  • Degree or higher education qualification
  • State registered clinical scientist

Desirable:

  • Project management accreditation
  • Chartered Engineer status, IET

Experience

Essential:

  • Extensive experience as a Consultant Clinical Scientist
  • Comprehensive knowledge across multiple disciplines within Medical Physics and Clinical Engineering
  • Specialized knowledge and experience in a recognized Medical Physics discipline
  • Senior-level experience contributing to organizational change and staff engagement
  • Demonstrated professional leadership experience
  • Experience in leading transformational change and continuous improvement within Clinical Physics
  • Proven ability to collaborate with internal and external stakeholders
  • Significant experience in delivering quality improvement and ensuring high clinical safety standards
  • Experience in serious incident review processes
  • Background in complex healthcare environments, achieving operational targets and strategic goals
  • Experience in workforce planning and redesign
  • Proficient in resource management, budget oversight, and business case development
  • Experience in collaborating with leaders across health and care disciplines

Desirable:

  • Substantial research and development portfolio with a successful track record in securing research funding
  • Experience supervising pre and post-doctoral students
  • Experienced in delivering educational content in physics or engineering topics

Knowledge

Essential:

  • Significant experience and training in professional leadership
  • Strong research knowledge and capacity-building skills
  • Broad understanding of ionizing radiation laws, health and safety legislation, and medical equipment guidelines
