Research Scientist in Gene Therapy for Norrie Disease

London, Greater London, United Kingdom UCL Eastman Dental Institute Full time

About the Role

We are seeking a highly motivated researcher with expertise in AAV gene therapy to join our team at the UCL Eastman Dental Institute. The successful candidate will be working on a project to develop a gene therapy for Norrie disease, a rare genetic condition that affects boys and leads to progressive hearing loss.

Key Responsibilities

  • Evaluate NDP gene augmentation via a viral construct and test its effectiveness in mouse models of Norrie disease
  • Investigate whether the gene therapy prevents death of sensory hair cells in the cochlea of the inner ear and hearing loss, and restores retinal vascular barrier function
  • Test whether restoring the missing NDP-induced intracellular signaling in endothelial cells prevents hearing loss
  • Design NDP viral constructs for clinical Norrie gene therapy

About You

To be successful in this role, you will have a PhD in a relevant area and a strong background in AAV therapies. You will also have laboratory experience and a proven research aptitude. Experience in managing and breeding genetically modified mouse colonies would be an advantage.

What We Offer

As a researcher at the UCL Eastman Dental Institute, you will have the opportunity to work on a highly translational and multidisciplinary project that brings together the relevant technologies required for this project. You will also have access to state-of-the-art facilities and a collaborative research environment.

Benefits

  • 41 days holiday (including 27 days annual leave, 8 bank holidays, and 6 closure days)
  • Defined benefit career average revalued earnings pension scheme (CARE)
  • Cycle to work scheme and season ticket loan
  • On-site nursery and on-site gym
  • Enhanced maternity, paternity, and adoption pay
  • Employee assistance programme: Staff Support Service
  • Discounted medical insurance
