Senior Research Scientist for Vaccine Advisory

London, Greater London, United Kingdom UK Health Security Agency Full time

Position Overview

The Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation serves as a scientific advisory body that provides expert guidance to HM Government on immunisation policies. This committee is supported by a dedicated scientific secretariat operating within the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA).

The successful candidate will be tasked with delivering scientific secretariat support to the UK Joint Committee for Vaccination and Immunisation (JCVI), along with its sub-groups and various expert groups within UKHSA. This role is a graduate-level position, overseen by the JCVI Routine Immunisation lead, who collaborates closely with the Head of the JCVI scientific secretariat and consultant leads focused on vaccine-preventable diseases.

Key Responsibilities

The role involves providing scientific secretariat assistance to the Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation, as well as specific UKHSA groups and sub-groups formed to offer expert advice. Key responsibilities include:

  • Collaborating with the chair and relevant consultant epidemiologists to ensure the effective operation of assigned JCVI sub-committees and UKHSA expert groups.
  • Creating support documents of a scientific and/or technical nature in partnership with UKHSA experts and committee members.
  • Preparing meeting agendas and associated documentation within established timelines.
  • Coordinating the collection and distribution of meeting materials with the help of administrative personnel.
  • Organising and participating in meetings, documenting discussions, and drafting minutes and follow-up actions.
  • Assisting the Chair and Members in achieving their objectives.
  • Overseeing administrative staff to ensure efficient arrangements for meeting venues, equipment, refreshments, travel, and other necessities.

The post-holder will be responsible for coordinating and attending meetings, compiling and disseminating paperwork, documenting discussions, and preparing action notes. They may also be required to follow up on actions with members to ensure progress. Additionally, the post-holder may be tasked with drafting correspondence on behalf of committee Chairs and facilitating information flow between internal and external groups associated with UKHSA.

Responsibilities are diverse and include liaising with other UKHSA divisions and certain government departments regarding JCVI recommendations and providing scientific support during meetings. The post-holder may also be called upon to gather contributions for responses to Parliamentary inquiries on behalf of JCVI.

This role necessitates developing and maintaining a thorough understanding of the scientific issues pertinent to the JCVI and UKHSA expert groups. The post-holder is accountable for bringing relevant issues and evidence to the attention of the Chair and committee members. This includes reviewing pertinent scientific literature, surveillance reports, and media coverage, as well as attending relevant conferences and seminars.

The post-holder will efficiently manage Freedom of Information (FOI) requests and coordinate with the Press Office regarding media statements as needed. This role may also involve assisting in crafting responses to inquiries from health professionals, medical students, academics, media representatives, the general public, and other interested parties, requiring discretion and sensitivity in communication.
