We are currently seeking a dedicated and skilled Senior Clinical Biochemistry Specialist to oversee the Biochemistry services within our organization. This role will also involve providing occasional assistance to the Biochemistry laboratory at an alternate location. The successful candidate will play a pivotal role in all facets of service provision, including education, quality assurance, and clinical collaboration.

We invite applications from Clinical Scientists who possess a comprehensive understanding of the demands associated with a high-volume Biochemistry laboratory. As a vital member of our team, reporting to the Lead Clinical Scientist, you will serve as the clinical authority for the Biochemistry service. You will be expected to work collaboratively with a small team while also demonstrating the ability to operate independently to deliver a superior service aligned with accreditation standards.

Key Responsibilities

The selected candidate will support the Lead Clinical Scientist in delivering a thorough scientific and clinical advisory service within Blood Sciences and Clinical Biochemistry. This position entails a diverse and challenging range of scientific and managerial tasks aimed at enhancing operational practices within the Blood Sciences laboratories and across the healthcare facility. The post holder will act as the clinical lead for the Blood Sciences service, with occasional responsibilities at the alternate location as necessary.

You will be expected to cultivate and maintain strong working relationships with all levels of staff, both scientific and medical, to ensure the effective delivery of services. The role requires a high degree of autonomy, necessitating the coordination of activities to guarantee an efficient service.

Job Duties

  • Provide expert guidance to medical, nursing, and other personnel regarding the clinical interpretation of biochemistry tests and their limitations. Advise on patient investigations, including test selection, preparation, and sample collection.
  • Be accountable for the clinical authorization of patient reports, providing expert interpretive comments as necessary, requesting additional tests, and coordinating with other laboratories offering specialized services.
  • Assume personal and professional responsibility for the advice provided and for decisions made, including those of junior staff.
  • Ensure that all critical results are communicated to the appropriate healthcare provider, recommending necessary actions or further testing as required.
Qualifications

Essential
  • First or second class honors degree in a relevant field.
  • Successful completion of a recognized training program in clinical biochemistry.
  • MSc in Clinical Biochemistry or a related discipline.
  • HCPC registration as a Clinical Scientist.
  • Achievement of Part 1 Fellowship of the Royal College of Pathologists (FRCPath) examination.
  • Proven knowledge of routine and specialized analytical methods and quality assurance.
  • Evidence of ongoing professional development.
Desirable
  • PhD in Clinical Biochemistry or a related field.
Experience

Essential
  • Completion of a significant period in a registered Clinical Scientist role.
  • Basic understanding of managerial processes and structures within the NHS and Pathology networks.
  • Experience in clinical report writing.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft software and Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS).
  • Experience working across all areas of relevant diagnostic laboratories.
  • Ability to write, review, and adhere to Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
  • Capability to conduct staff training and ensure compliance with professional standards.
  • Willingness to work in environments with biological risks, including chemical hazards and potential exposure to body fluids.
  • Ability to use visual display units for extended periods.
  • Experience in conducting audits and a solid understanding of clinical governance principles and quality management.

  • Experience in teaching.
