Conservation Role at Orford Ness

This is an exciting opportunity to join the team at Orford Ness as a Ranger, working on one of Europe's most important conservation sites. As a key member of the team, you will be responsible for delivering conservation work, managing habitats, and ensuring the site is sustainably managed. You will also be involved in visitor management, surveying, and monitoring of species, as well as working with a team of volunteers to deliver an effective engagement campaign to support the work of increasing the breeding population of gulls on Orford Ness.

About the Role

You will be based at Orford Ness, working as a Ranger for the Lesser Black Gull project. Your responsibilities will include day-to-day practical and technical management of the countryside property, including equipment maintenance, habitat management, ecological monitoring, visitor experience, and site presentation. You will also be responsible for building and maintaining strong professional relationships with colleagues, volunteers, contractors, and partners. Additionally, you will be involved in excellent communication of our conservation work to a wide range of audiences, both new and existing, through events, guided walks, and engagement with local communities.

Requirements

We are looking for someone who is practically experienced in conservation work, happy to talk to all kinds of people about the work they are doing, and hard-working and willing to learn. You should be able to work safely, using risk assessments and following guidelines, and have experience in managing land, access, and conservation, and working outdoors. You should also be able to use machinery and equipment, with relevant certificates, and be a driver with a full UK driving licence.
