Duties & Responsibilities:

  • To work collaboratively with teaching staff in all engineering areas, providing practical support to students during lessons and project work.
  • To prepare and maintain equipment for practical lessons and demonstrations, ensuring that all apparatus is in good working order.
  • To safely handle and dispose of used materials, including hazardous substances, and respond to potential hazards in the workplace.
  • To provide technical guidance to students in practical lessons, ensuring that they adhere to manufacturer guidelines and health and safety protocols.
  • To maintain a clean and safe working environment, carrying out routine maintenance and repairs as necessary.
  • To evaluate new workshop lessons and identify potential problems, suggesting improvements to enhance the student experience.
  • To maintain a computer database for the department, requesting new stock as needed and ensuring that products are stored and labelled correctly.
  • To ensure that health and safety checks and measures are adhered to at all times, checking the safety of the practical area and ensuring that equipment is safe for use.
  • To comply with the health and safety policy of the college and other instructions given as necessary, reporting any safety hazards or unsafe working arrangements.
  • To work flexibly as part of the faculty team, covering all aspects of team provision and assisting with curriculum delivery.
  • To take ownership of embedding safeguarding practices into their role, as appropriate.
  • To prioritize and manage multiple tasks, meeting deadlines as required.
  • To deal with queries in a professional and calm manner.
  • To understand and apply appropriate procedures relating to equipment and health and safety.
  • To adhere to all policy and legislative practice during every activity of work, attending necessary training as required.
  • To keep up to date with current procedures and practice through continued professional development.
  • To be an appropriate person or area to deal with general maintenance queries.
  • To work on their own initiative and take instruction when needed.
  • To write and maintain risk assessments for technician activities.
  • To commit to other duties compatible with the post held, which may reasonably be required from time to time.

Job Requirements:

  • A qualification in a science subject to at least A Level or equivalent.
