Position Overview

The position entails the collection and preparation of clinical samples for testing, as well as the safe disposal of medical waste. You will be responsible for entering patient-related data into the Laboratory Information System or other manual documentation systems. Reception duties will also be part of your responsibilities, including handling phone inquiries from colleagues in various departments and external organizations.

You will assist the Biomedical Scientist in delivering laboratory services, conducting specific laboratory tests while having senior staff available for guidance. In pathology-related roles, you will manage the receipt, storage, and release of deceased individuals from the mortuary.

Additionally, you will play a role in training new or less experienced team members.

Required Qualifications

  • Standard Grade English and a Science Subject are essential.
  • A solid understanding of Biomedical Science is necessary.
  • Familiarity with anatomy and physiology is preferred, though training will be provided.
  • Extended supervised training for a minimum of one year is required due to the extensive range of duties, equivalent to National Vocational Qualification Level 3.
  • High awareness of Infection Control Policies and Procedures is crucial.
  • Proficient keyboard skills are necessary.
  • Manual dexterity is essential.
  • Commitment to ongoing personal development through participation in relevant meetings and courses.
  • Flexibility in work approach is important.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Arithmetic standard grade or equivalent.
  • HNC in applied sciences.
  • Previous laboratory experience is advantageous.
  • Experience in an NHS laboratory setting would be beneficial.
  • Strong communication skills, particularly in oral, written, and presentation formats.
  • Excellent organizational skills.
  • Ability to perform under pressure.

Employment Details

This is a fixed-term position for 6 months, part-time, with a commitment of 7.4 hours per week. Please note that the salary for this role will be pro-rata.

Working Environment

The role will be situated within the microbiology department.

The working hours for this position will be during the backshift, from 4:15 PM to 8:00 PM.
