Job Summary

The Education Authority is seeking a highly skilled and dedicated Classroom Support Assistant to join our team. As a key member of our educational support staff, you will play a vital role in providing support and care to pupils with special educational needs.

Main Responsibilities

  • Assist the class teacher with the support and care of pupils with special educational needs, including enabling access to the curriculum and attending to personal needs.
  • Develop an understanding of the specific needs of the pupils to be supported and contribute to the development of individualized support plans.
  • Assist with authorized programs, participate in the evaluation of support, and encourage pupil participation in such programs.
  • Contribute to the inclusion of pupils in mainstream classrooms under the direction of the class teacher.
  • Assist with operational difficulties and medical difficulties pertaining to pupil disabilities.
  • Support the implementation of behavioral management programs as directed.
  • Assist pupils in moving around the school and on and off transport.

General Classroom Support

  • Assist pupils to learn as effectively as possible in group situations and on their own by assisting with the management of the learning environment.
  • Be aware of school policies, procedures, and confidential issues linked to home, pupil, teacher, and school work, and maintain confidentiality appropriately.
  • Establish a supportive relationship with the pupils concerned.
  • Prepare and produce appropriate resources to support pupils and take care of materials for play sessions.
  • Supervise groups of pupils or individual pupils on specified activities, including talking and listening, using ICT, and other duties as directed by the class teacher.
  • Under the direction of the teacher, and following an appropriate risk assessment, assist with off-site activities.
  • Provide continuity of adult care, including supervising play and cloakrooms, and ensuring a safe environment for pupils.
  • Report to the class teacher any signs or symptoms displayed by pupils that may suggest they require expert or immediate attention.

Administration

  • Assist with classroom administration.
  • Assist the class teacher and/or other professionals with the implementation of the system for recording pupil progress.
  • Contribute to the maintenance of pupil progress records.
  • Provide regular feedback about pupils to the teacher.
  • Duplicate written materials, assist with the production of charts and displays, record radio and television programs, catalogue and process books and resources.

Other Duties

  • Attend relevant in-service training.
  • Assist work placement students with practical tasks.
  • Perform other duties as may be assigned by the Principal within the level of the post.
