Project Manager

Overview

Situated along the picturesque Menai Strait in North Wales, Bangor University's School of Ocean Sciences (SOS) stands as a leading institution in Marine Science within Europe. The department boasts an array of advanced teaching and research facilities, including both tropical and coldwater aquaria, as well as a state-of-the-art 35-metre research vessel.

Our faculty members are pioneers in their respective fields, engaging in research that addresses pressing global issues such as climate change, biodiversity decline, and the unsustainable use of resources.

The Project

The selected candidate will contribute to the innovative UKRI-funded initiative, FisHistory, which unites historians, marine biologists, and historical ecologists. The project's primary objective is to foster interdisciplinary strategies to enhance the sustainable management of fisheries and marine ecosystems, complementing traditional single-discipline methodologies.

This initiative aims to amalgamate three key areas of knowledge: historical documentation (including naturalist accounts, newspapers, charts, government reports, and estate records), contemporary fishers' ecological insights, and current scientific data.

With a focus on the herring—a species of significant ecological and socio-economic relevance—the project will work to identify essential habitats, characterize population dynamics (including long-term abundance variations), and deepen the understanding of socio-economic connections, particularly in the waters surrounding England and Wales.

Purpose of the Job

The role is designed to support the planning and execution of interdisciplinary research (emphasizing data collection and management) concerning marine fish (herring) and their fisheries, aiming to enhance understanding of their biology and importance to human communities, heavily relying on historical sources. Responsibilities will also include conducting interviews with fishers and other stakeholders, as well as collaborating with external and internal partners. The post holder will work closely with a postdoctoral researcher and the principal investigator/co-investigators.

To promote interdisciplinary capacity, the successful candidate will be based in the School of Ocean Sciences on the Menai Bridge campus and will collaborate with colleagues from the School of History, Law, and Social Sciences on the Bangor main campus. A collaborative and effective approach to working with stakeholders and colleagues from diverse disciplines is essential.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

  • Data Collection: This includes sourcing, gathering, reviewing, extracting, and managing historical records and contemporary scientific data (including online, archive, and library sources); planning and conducting interviews.
  • Research Outcome Delivery: Contributing to publications and disseminating research findings to relevant organizations (including industry and government); engaging with the public.
  • Project Administration: Assisting in the management of the research project, including data management; participating in meetings; organizing workshops; maintaining stakeholder engagement; social media interaction; planning fieldwork (e.g., fisher interviews, archive visits).

Other Duties and Responsibilities

  • Participation in performance reviews and developmental activities.
  • Compliance with the University's equality policies and statements, Dignity at Work and Study Policy, and the University's Welsh Language Scheme.
  • General duty of care regarding health, safety, and well-being, ensuring a safe working environment for all.
  • Adherence to relevant legal and financial policies and procedures.
