Position Overview

Situated along the picturesque Menai Strait in North Wales, Bangor University's School of Ocean Sciences (SOS) stands as one of Europe's foremost Marine Science departments. The institution boasts a diverse array of research and teaching facilities, including specialized laboratories, aquaria for both tropical and coldwater species, and a modern 35-meter research vessel designed for extensive marine exploration.

The faculty at SOS are recognized leaders in their respective fields, engaging in research that addresses critical global issues such as climate change, biodiversity conservation, and sustainable resource management.

Project Details

The selected candidate will contribute to the innovative UKRI-funded initiative, FisHistory, which unites experts from history, marine biology, and ecological studies. The primary objective of this project is to cultivate interdisciplinary methodologies to enhance the sustainable management of fisheries and marine ecosystems, complementing traditional single-discipline strategies.

This project aims to amalgamate three distinct knowledge domains: historical documentation (including naturalist accounts, periodicals, nautical charts, governmental publications, and estate records), contemporary fishers' ecological insights, and current scientific research data.

With a focus on the herring—a species of significant ecological and economic relevance—the project will identify essential habitats, characterize population dynamics (including long-term abundance fluctuations), and explore socio-economic connections, particularly in the waters surrounding England and Wales.

Job Purpose

The role involves assisting in the strategic planning and implementation of interdisciplinary research centered on marine fish (specifically herring) and their fisheries. This research aims to deepen the understanding of their biological characteristics and their importance to human communities, heavily relying on historical documentation. Responsibilities will also include conducting interviews with fishers and stakeholders, as well as collaborating with both external and internal partners. The successful candidate will work closely with a postdoctoral researcher and the principal investigator/co-investigators.

To foster interdisciplinary collaboration, the successful applicant will be based in the School of Ocean Sciences on the Menai Bridge campus and will engage closely with colleagues from the School of History, Law, and Social Sciences at the Bangor main campus. A collaborative spirit and the ability to work effectively with stakeholders from diverse disciplines are essential.

Main Responsibilities

  • Data Collection: This includes sourcing, gathering, reviewing, extracting, and managing historical records and contemporary scientific data (including online, archival, and library resources); planning and conducting interviews.
  • Research Outcome Support: Contributing to the production of publications and disseminating research findings to relevant entities (including industry and government); engaging in public outreach.
  • Project Administration: Assisting in the management of the research project, including data oversight; participating in meetings; organizing workshops; maintaining stakeholder relationships; engaging on social media; planning fieldwork (e.g., fisher interviews, archival visits).

Additional Responsibilities

  • Participation in performance reviews and professional development activities.
  • Compliance with the University's equality policies and Dignity at Work and Study Policy.
  • Ensuring a safe and healthy working environment in accordance with health and safety regulations.
  • Adherence to relevant legal and financial policies and procedures.
