PhD Studentship: Advanced Snake Robot for Fusion Power Plant Inspection

Rolls-Royce University Technology Centre (UTC) in Manufacturing and On-Wing Technology, The University of Nottingham is seeking a highly motivated PhD candidate to contribute to a groundbreaking project focused on the development of cutting-edge robotics technology.
This exciting opportunity will see you working alongside leading experts at the forefront of fusion power research. You'll be directly involved in designing and implementing an innovative extra-long compliant snake robot specifically engineered for inspection tasks within the challenging environment of fusion power plants.
Project Focus:
- Conducting a comprehensive review of existing robotic systems designed for confined spaces, with a particular emphasis on their localization strategies.
- Designing and constructing an extra-long compliant snake robot capable of navigating intricate and confined areas, such as pipes and vessels within fusion power plants.
- Developing kinematic, static, and dynamic models to accurately represent the behavior and performance of the snake robot.
- Implementing advanced localization techniques for the snake robot, leveraging various sensory feedback mechanisms including vision and Fiber Bragg sensors.
- Conducting rigorous demonstrations to evaluate the effectiveness of the developed snake robot and its navigation and localization capabilities.
Ideal Candidate Profile:
- Possess a First or Upper Second-Class Honours degree in Mechatronics, Robotics, Mechanical Engineering, Computer Science, or a closely related scientific discipline.
- Demonstrate exceptional analytical and numerical skills, coupled with a strong academic foundation.
- Exhibit proven experience in developing precision mechatronic systems and algorithms.
- Possess the ability to analyze and model kinematic and/or dynamic behavior of mechanical or robotic systems.
- Have practical experience implementing control and kinematics strategies using hardware-in-the-loop simulations.
- Be proficient in relevant software packages, such as MATLAB, SolidWorks/Creo, ROS/OpenCV/Python, LabVIEW/C languages.
- Display a highly driven, professional, and self-reliant work ethic.
- Prior experience working within an industrial setting is highly advantageous.
- Demonstrate the ability to produce high-quality technical documentation and presentations.
