Position Overview

An exceptional opportunity has emerged for a Band 6 Breast Care Clinical Nurse Specialist to join the Breast Care Service. This role will primarily be based within the County Durham & Darlington NHS Foundation Trust.

The selected candidate will collaborate with the Macmillan Clinical Nurse Specialist team to effectively plan, execute, and assess expert nursing care while offering specialized guidance and emotional support to individuals diagnosed with breast cancer across various care environments within the trust. You will work in partnership with Breast Consultant Surgeons, Oncologists, and other members of the multidisciplinary team to ensure a cohesive, integrated, and holistic approach to Breast Cancer Care. Your contributions will encompass clinical practice, education, research/audit, and the application of national guidelines, with a focus on enhancing the quality of breast care services alongside the nursing team.

Key Responsibilities

The successful candidate will:

  • Provide comprehensive support to patients diagnosed with breast cancer, offering advice and information to patients, families, and caregivers.
  • Actively participate as a member of the multidisciplinary team, managing a caseload of patients as a key worker.
  • Attend breast clinics within the Trust and provide support for all patients undergoing treatments, including surgical and oncology interventions for breast cancer.
  • Conduct specialist nurse-led clinics and engage in the development of the Breast Clinical Nurse Specialist service.

Job Requirements

The role necessitates a strong commitment to providing specialized nursing support, enhancing clinical practices, and improving service delivery for patients diagnosed with breast cancer. Candidates should possess the ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team, effectively organizing their workload while adhering to established protocols and national standards.

Close collaboration with surgical and oncology teams is essential to deliver evidence-based care for all patients diagnosed with breast cancer. This includes participation in breast clinics and leading specialist nurse-led clinics.

Additionally, the role involves providing education and support to both nursing and non-nursing staff and engaging in local and regional breast forums.

Qualifications and Skills

Essential qualifications include:

  • NMC registration
  • Registered Nurse status
  • Degree-level education in a relevant healthcare discipline
  • Evidence of ongoing professional development

Desirable qualifications may include:

  • Teaching Certificate
  • IRMER Training or willingness to undertake
  • Principles and Practice in Breast Care Course (to be completed if not already done)
  • Advanced communication skills training or willingness to undertake
  • Level 2 Psychology training or willingness to undertake

Experience

Essential experience includes:

  • Significant post-registration experience
  • Experience in multi-professional collaboration
  • Demonstrated effective communication skills
  • Ability to support and drive change

Desirable experience may include:

  • Previous role as a Clinical Nurse Specialist or within a relevant specialty
  • Experience in audit and research
