Lead Research Engineer

We are seeking a Lead Research Engineer to become a vital part of our Non-Destructive Testing Team.

The Lead Research Engineer (LRE) position is primarily centered on the autonomous technical execution of projects and guiding the advancement of project-related initiatives across The MTC, collaborating with various technology divisions and industrial sectors.

Key Responsibilities

As a Lead Research Engineer, your responsibilities will include:

  • Overseeing project technical outputs, ensuring that deliverables meet or surpass established customer expectations, while adhering to agreed budgets and timelines. When assigned, serve as the Technical Governance lead for project outputs.
  • Conduct pioneering engineering research focused mainly on technology/manufacturing readiness levels (TRL/MRL) 3+, demonstrating successful industrial project execution.
  • Assist Senior Managers proactively in identifying, technically specifying, and delivering innovative technology capabilities to The MTC, clients, or industrial members.
  • Engage in all facets of project delivery, taking comprehensive ownership and ensuring compliance with relevant standards, providing technical support for commissioning, and managing project budgets and deliverables.

Candidate Profile

We are looking for an individual who possesses:

  • A degree in engineering, technology, science, or mathematics.
  • Ideally, progress towards professional registration; a Chartered professional qualification is preferred.
  • Proven extensive knowledge and application of NDT techniques through prior project experience, particularly with industrial radiographic methods (notably X-ray Computed Tomography (XCT)) and analytical techniques.

Additional knowledge of various NDT techniques such as:

  • Ultrasonic Inspection methods,
  • Electromagnetic inspection (Eddy current testing),
  • Thermographic inspection,
  • Image-based inspection methodologies (visual inspection, hyperspectral imaging).

Furthermore:

  • Strong understanding of the pros and cons of these technologies and their suitability for specific inspection applications.
  • The capability to apply this expertise to lead validation trials to demonstrate a system's effectiveness for an application.
  • Provide robust technical leadership and assist project teams in executing their tasks.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of the manufacturing industry and an understanding of manufacturing systems and technologies.
  • Experience in R&D or project-oriented environments.
  • Demonstrated experience in offering technical leadership, knowledge transfer, and strategic guidance.
  • Recognized expertise in a specific area relevant to the theme, with expert knowledge of the manufacturing sector and a deep understanding of manufacturing systems and technologies.
  • A commitment to collaborative work and effective networking, recognizing the contributions of others and fostering teamwork with a unified MTC mindset.
  • Practical hands-on experience, with a problem-solving approach and a willingness to actively participate in the completion of tasks when necessary.
  • Self-driven and proactive, capable of working independently to meet deadlines, budgets, and quality standards, whether as part of a team or autonomously.
  • Experience in environments where adherence to associated processes and policies is crucial for maintaining confidentiality.
