The London Assembly plays a crucial role in overseeing the Mayor's actions by interrogating their decisions and examining significant issues affecting London. Comprised of 25 elected Assembly Members, the Assembly is supported by the Secretariat, which facilitates its operations. The Communications Team is responsible for promoting the Assembly's work through various channels including press relations, social media, and public events.

About the Role

This position offers a unique opportunity to serve as the Research and Policy Manager for the Conservative Members of the London Assembly. The role focuses on delivering research and policy assistance to the Members of the Group, while also overseeing the associated staffing team. Collaborating closely with the Head of Office, this role is pivotal in aiding Assembly Members with their responsibilities and ensuring accountability from the Mayor of London.

You will be responsible for providing comprehensive research, policy briefings, reports, and advice to Assembly Members. Additionally, you will develop and execute proactive outreach and communication strategies. Strong organizational, analytical, and problem-solving skills are essential, along with a background in relevant policy areas and management.

Your Daily Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with the Head of Office to manage and lead the Senior Researchers within the team.
  • Oversee the production and dissemination of reports for elected Members, ensuring alignment with their priorities in key policy areas.
  • Design and implement effective outreach and communication strategies for assigned Assembly Members, coordinating closely with communications and research colleagues.
  • Ensure that elected Members receive high-quality research services and policy support, while engaging with external stakeholders across public, private, and voluntary sectors.
  • Act as a liaison for GLA officers regarding London Assembly scrutiny activities related to Group Members, facilitating effective communication and maximizing Members' influence.
  • Assist the Head of Office in leading the broader team, providing problem-solving and delivery capabilities.

Skills, Knowledge, and Experience

To be considered for this role, candidates must meet the following essential criteria:

  • Extensive experience in a similar role within a political or high-profile environment, with a proven ability to resolve complex issues and liaise with external organizations.
  • Demonstrated capability to lead and inspire a team, ensuring the successful implementation of policies and strategies.
  • Ability to produce clear and concise reports and research on complex topics for diverse audiences, presenting information effectively for Assembly Members' use.
  • Proven experience in policy briefing within a political or public sector context, along with strong research skills and the ability to synthesize information from various sources.
  • A comprehensive understanding of current policy issues impacting London, as well as knowledge of the legislative framework governing the GLA.
