About the Role

We are seeking a highly skilled Senior Platform Engineer to join our team at the Department for Business and Trade. As a key member of our Digital, Data and Technology (DDaT) directorate, you will play a crucial role in building and operating our cutting-edge developer platform in AWS.

Main Responsibilities

You will be responsible for designing, building, and scaling our global product platform, ensuring it is performant, secure, and feature-rich. This will involve working with development teams to provide them with the tools they need to do their job, including application performance monitoring, exception, log, and metrics aggregation, dashboards, and declarative CI/CD pipelines.

You will also be responsible for evangelizing product teams about service-level indicators, objectives, and error budgets, and negotiating them. Additionally, you will participate in an on-call rota and receive an additional allowance.

Key Technologies

You will be working with a range of technologies, including Amazon Web Services, Azure, AWS CodePipelines and AWS CodeBuild, Terraform & AWS Copilot (CloudFormation), Docker, Elastic Container Service (ECS) and Elastic Container Registry (ECR), ElasticSearch/OpenSearch, Python and Django framework, PostgreSQL as a service (Amazon RDS), Sentry, and Redis/Elasticache.

Requirements

To be successful in this role, you will need to have experience and fluency in Python, cloud experience with either Amazon Web Services, Azure or Google Cloud, and the ability to build code-defined, reliable, and well-tested infrastructure on top of cloud computing systems. You will also need to have experience in designing, analysing, and troubleshooting distributed systems, knowledge of Linux/Unix fundamentals and TCP/IP networking, and the ability to see user impact in the infrastructure changes.

Desirable Skills

It is desirable that you have experience in designing and implementing Docker images through containerisation, PaaS, Kubernetes, Django, oauth2/saml2 integrations in Python, and experience in prototyping through reuse of existing Open-Source components.
