Job Description:

Role Overview:

The Duty Compliance Accountant is a critical position that plays a key role in ensuring the accuracy of UK customs and excise liabilities in the general ledger. This role requires a strong understanding of HMRC guidelines and the ability to manage and oversee two month ends. The successful candidate will be responsible for providing fully supported numbers to satisfy the monthly excise and import duty payments at the end of each duty period.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Review, consolidate, and prepare monthly excise duty liability.
  • Ensure accurate accounting of customs and excise duty liabilities in the general ledger in accordance with the business timetable.
  • Forecast excise duty gains and losses at UK terminals and report variances to budget.
  • Ensure the core UK terminal activity operates within HMRC guidelines and that all stock terminals have appropriate licenses to cover operational activity.
  • Manage excise duty deferment limits with UK terminals to ensure no interruption to supply.
  • Communicate tax implications of operational changes to the business and ensure accurate reporting and compliance.
  • Build and maintain strong working relationships with internal and external excise duty stakeholders.
  • Engage with HMRC and speak with authority on customs and excise matters with local agents.

Requirements:

  • Accounting and finance degree and working towards CIMA/ACCA/ACA qualifications.
  • Previous experience in a similar position with exposure to duty and excise accounting.
  • Confident verbal and written communication skills with the ability to interact with various stakeholders.
  • Strong analytical skills with a high degree of attention to detail.
  • Ability to learn required legislation and legal notices relating to customs and excise.
  • Advanced Excel and PowerBI skills.
  • Ability to work as part of a small team to contribute to team results and deadlines.
  • Commitment to a minimum 12-month contract.
