Main Responsibilities
The Lead Upper GI Clinical Nurse Specialist (Lead CNS) plays a pivotal role in ensuring the delivery of high-quality services for patients referred to the Upper GI service, including those with Upper GI cancer diagnoses. This position entails not only being a Clinical Nurse Specialist within the Surgical Clinical Care group but also overseeing the professional development and management of both Upper and Lower GI Clinical Nurse Specialists.
The Lead UGI CNS will exhibit strong clinical decision-making abilities and a commitment to monitoring and elevating care standards within the Upper GI service. This role involves a multifaceted approach to patient care, utilizing clinical expertise, education, and quality improvement initiatives. Collaborating with the CNS team, the Lead UGI CNS will empower primary caregivers with the necessary skills and knowledge to provide exceptional care to all patients throughout their treatment journey.
Additionally, the Lead UGI CNS will be involved in the creation and execution of Integrated Care Pathways and relevant protocols. This role will also require the development of skills to serve as a resource for educating and training other healthcare professionals and students, thereby ensuring optimal nursing care.

Essential Criteria
- Registered nurse, 1st Level with current NMC registration
- Post-registration qualification in Oncology or Haematology
- Advanced communication skills training
