About the Role

The Chair of St John Council will play a pivotal role in raising the presence of St John Ambulance Cymru in their local community. This is a volunteer, non-paid position that requires a strong leader to drive the organization's strategic direction.

Key Responsibilities
  • Oversee the production of the County's Business Plan, ensuring it reflects the organization's strategic direction.
  • Ensure the Council meets the objects and responsibilities as set out in the Rules for St John Councils in Wales, ensuring compliance with the Charities Act 2011.
  • Encourage the optimum use of all available resources within the County.
  • Develop an effective working relationship with the President and County Commissioner, as well as NHQ staff and Trustees.
  • Take a lead role in County events on fundraising issues, ensuring initiatives are consistent with the overall strategic direction and priorities across Wales.
  • Maintain constructive liaison with key opinion-formers within the County, facilitating contacts and engaging with external bodies to further the charitable work of the organization.
  • Promote St John Ambulance Cymru in an ambassadorial capacity, helping to secure recognition of its achievements.
  • Lead the Council in reviewing its key policies and the spread of good practice, drawing up standing orders to regulate the conduct of the Council's affairs.
  • Attend Committees and key strategic meetings as required, ensuring the Council's conduct a regular rota of visits organized by the County Commissioner to Divisions within the County.
Person Specification
  • Proven experience from the wider community and key public sector, private sector, and partner organizations.
  • Current or previous experience in a senior employment role and/or a person of standing in the community.
  • Strong interpersonal and leadership skills.
  • Aptitude for strategic thinking.
  • Good communications skills.
  • Extensive knowledge of local people and affairs in the County.
  • Wide-reaching network of key contacts within their county.
  • The ability to recruit support from the business, professional, and public sectors.
  • The ability to cultivate good relations with various bodies in the community, as well as other third sector organizations.
  • Willingness to commit time to the role and has a positive outlook.
