Chief Architect and Technology Leader

Macclesfield, Cheshire East, United Kingdom Royal London Full time

Job Title: Director of Architectural Strategy

Contract Type: Permanent

Location: Flexible

Working style: Hybrid 50% home/office based

We are currently in search of a highly qualified and seasoned leader in architecture to join our team at Royal London. As the foremost Architect within the organization, you will play a pivotal role in guiding and mentoring your team to develop the technology strategies and frameworks that support our business objectives.

You will hold full accountability for a team of technology architects while also having a collaborative role in ensuring coherence with other architectural disciplines (such as data, business, and security) throughout Royal London. Your ability to collaborate effectively will be essential, as you will be working in a multidisciplinary environment where problem-solving with colleagues across various sectors will be a regular part of your role.

Your responsibilities will include overseeing the architecture governance at Royal London, ensuring a balance between immediate value creation and long-term, organization-wide applicability. You will design and implement controls and guidelines that help maintain architectural alignment while allowing appropriate autonomy for local design teams.

This position offers a remarkable opportunity for a driven and purposeful individual to make a substantial impact in a dynamic and challenging setting. As the head of the Architecture Function, you will ensure the successful delivery and execution of programs and projects across all business lines, providing transparency to senior leadership and supporting the organization through complex transformation initiatives.

Key Responsibilities

Develop and sustain an enterprise architecture framework that offers a comprehensive view of the organization's technology landscape, capabilities, and interdependencies. Establish and manage architecture governance processes and controls to ensure consistency, compliance, and alignment with business objectives. Define and monitor a technology strategy that aligns with the business strategy in collaboration with business and technology stakeholders. Create and uphold architecture roadmaps and transition states that guide the evolution of technology platforms and solutions in alignment with business and technology strategies. These roadmaps will be categorized by team/domain and will provide a holistic view of necessary capability enhancements, optimization opportunities, and significant technology refresh initiatives. Define and maintain architectural standards, patterns, and guidelines to direct solution design and development efforts. Lead, mentor, and develop a team of Principal, Solution, and Enterprise architects. Foster and drive an active community of practice to promote 'craft excellence' across all areas of the architectural landscape. Manage a matrix team of security, business, and data architects to ensure overall alignment on architecture, while supporting the team in the creation of domain-specific roadmaps and target states that integrate into an enterprise-wide perspective.

Candidate Profile

Extensive experience and a proven track record in developing, leading, and implementing Enterprise Architecture practices across software development, application, and infrastructure technologies in large, complex organizations. Ability to demonstrate business value from Enterprise and Domain architecture, ensuring that architecture is not perceived as an 'ivory tower' discipline. Capacity to drive innovation, fostering an environment that encourages creative approaches, challenges the status quo, and inspires risk-taking while safeguarding core values. Results-oriented, contributing to change processes that enhance organizational performance and cultivate a culture of accountability. Commercially aware, understanding and managing business conflicts to ensure effective utilization of resources to prioritize delivery outcomes. Previous experience in creating, maintaining, and securing senior stakeholder approval for IT Roadmaps and Target Architecture States across multiple business units. Proven experience in establishing and leading an architecture governance board, such as an Architecture Review Committee or Technical Design Authority, with Executive Level stakeholders. Ability to influence key senior stakeholders across the organization, bringing technical depth to ensure that the Technology strategy and vision support business value. Demonstrated leadership capabilities, with a history of developing, attracting, and recruiting top talent, motivating teams, delegating effectively, celebrating diversity, and driving performance; with a strong record of developing others.
