About the Role

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Psychiatrist to lead our team across our female-only Psychiatric Intensive Care Units and male and female acute wards. This role requires a dynamic and inspiring leader who can foster a professional, open culture that empowers our clinical staff to provide exceptional, compassionate care.

As the Consultant Psychiatrist, you will be a visible and influential figure within our hospital. You will work collaboratively with a multi-professional management team, ensuring that our care meets the highest regulatory standards. Your leadership will be key in shaping the strategic direction of our unit, always prioritising safe, effective, and individualised care for every patient.

Key Responsibilities
  • Develop and implement a comprehensive treatment service that delivers high-quality care to patients with mental health problems, based on evidence-based practice.
  • Provide expert advice on psychiatric care, taking overall responsibility for a defined caseload of patients.
  • Collaborate with the multidisciplinary team to foster positive working relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Oversee the performance of Consultant Psychiatrists, ensuring systems are in place to support appraisal and revalidation, and identifying and escalating concerns about conduct or performance.
  • Provide clinical supervision and mentorship to other Consultant Psychiatrists, promoting effective leadership and professional development.
  • Work with the Responsible Officer to support the appraisal and revalidation process for other Psychiatrists.
  • Represent the business externally, raising the profile of our services and establishing working relationships with commissioners, community teams, and other key partners.
  • Participate in an out-of-hours rota with other Consultant Psychiatrists, ensuring adequate consultant cover across the hospital.
  • Contribute to quality enhancement and service evaluation projects, and participate in research relevant to service improvement.
  • Participate in educational and health promotion activities within the Mental Health Service, and liaise with General Practitioners to promote collaborative working.
  • Lead the Continuing Professional Development (CPD) programme for the hospital, fostering a culture of learning and professional growth.
  • Provide input and advice on initiatives requiring a medical perspective, such as implementing NICE recommendations or responding to external inquiries.
Requirements
  • Approved Clinician status
  • Member of the Royal College of Psychiatrists (MRCPsych) and in good CPD standing
  • Current registration with the General Medical Council (GMC)
Experience and Skills
  • At least five years' experience in an in-patient setting
  • Experience of working in a Psychiatric Intensive Care Unit
  • Experience of working in Acute Services (male or female)
  • Ability to take independent clinical decisions and demonstrate clinical leadership
Knowledge and Skills
  • Knowledge of evidence-based practice
  • In-depth knowledge of the Mental Health Act (MHA) and Mental Capacity Act (MCA)
  • Effective communication skills – verbal and written
  • Up-to-date knowledge of current practices in in-patient Psychiatry
  • Able to organise oneself and prioritise clinical need
  • Evidence of participation in audit
About Us

Baldock Manor is a 40-bed hospital in north Hertfordshire that provides specialist psychiatric services for adults. Our hospital has two female PICU wards and two acute wards.

We provide care and support for women at crisis level with a severe mental disorder who require rapid assessment and stabilisation in our PICU services. Our acute wards care for older adults, usually 55 years or older, who need a short-term hospital stay to stabilise their mental health.
