Job Summary

This is an exciting opportunity to join the HM Prison & Probation Service as an Operational Support Grade - HMP Grendon and HMP Springhill Prison Support Role. As a key member of our team, you will play a vital role in ensuring the smooth operation of the prison.

Key Responsibilities
  • Ensure the secure entry and exit of staff, visitors, and vehicles
  • Carry out searches of staff, prisoners, visitors, and vehicles
  • Escort vehicles and contractors around the prison site
  • Issue and collect staff keys and radios
  • Patrol and search perimeter fence areas
  • Operate the prison radio system
  • Monitor CCTV and report any suspicious activities
  • Welcome visitors and escort them if needed
  • Monitor and log mail coming into the prison
  • Report any contraband items and preserve evidence where needed
  • Ensure cell doors are locked and all prisoners are safely accounted for
  • Photograph prisoners
  • Process prisoners' property and parcels coming into the prison
  • Supervise prisoners
  • Exchange clothing and property
  • Help prison officers escort prisoners around the prison
  • Deliver and collect food trollies or use an electric tug vehicle
  • Transport prisoners and their escorts to their destination
  • Collect mail from the local sorting office
  • Monitor the prison's Personal Identification Number (PIN) phone system
  • Maintain the log of PIN phone requests from prisoners
  • Complete relevant records
Requirements
  • No qualifications are required for this role
  • Good judgement, common sense, responsibility, and teamwork are essential

Working Arrangements

You will work an average of 37 hours per week, including night shifts, evenings, weekends, and Bank/Public holidays on a rolling shift pattern. The frequency of night shifts will vary for each establishment and can be discussed at interview.
