Senior Advanced Clinical Practitioner

Overview of the Position
University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust is excited to present a remarkable opportunity to join our esteemed organization.
Below is a comprehensive outline of the responsibilities associated with this role.
Key Responsibilities
We are seeking to appoint a band 8a Senior Advanced Clinical Practitioner (ACP) to enhance our dynamic and well-established team within the Thoracic Surgery department. The ideal candidate will possess extensive experience and a strong motivation for thoracic surgery, alongside proven leadership capabilities to integrate into our existing ACP team.
The thoracic surgery ACP team plays a crucial role in delivering clinical care to patients both prior to and following thoracic surgical procedures, operating seven days a week as an integral part of the surgical team. This approach not only enhances patient care continuity and quality but also facilitates prompt admissions, seamless inpatient management, and improved discharge processes. Additionally, the thoracic ACP team oversees a highly effective ACP-led ward attender clinic, which involves the assessment and management of chest drains, postoperative complications, and wound care. This initiative significantly enhances the patient experience by minimizing hospital admissions and reducing length of stay.
The role is strongly supported by Consultant Thoracic Surgeons and the Lead ACP, providing ample opportunities for both personal and service development.
About Our Organization
As one of the largest acute teaching Trusts in England, we are committed to offering learning and development opportunities that empower you to achieve your career aspirations.
Non-clinical roles may involve a blend of on-site and remote work, with specific details and flexible working arrangements available for discussion during the interview process. Employees of UHS can access a variety of NHS discounts, enjoy a minimum of 35 days of paid holiday (pro rata), and benefit from a generous pension scheme.
Southampton is a desirable location for both living and working, situated on the south coast, featuring an international airport and direct train services to London. The New Forest National Park and the stunning beaches of the Jurassic coast are also in close proximity. The city boasts living costs that are approximately 20% lower than those in London, along with 14 schools rated as outstanding by Ofsted.
For this specific role, we are open to discussing flexible working hours. We encourage you to communicate your needs during the interview, and we will explore what is feasible for both the role and the service.
Job Duties
Responsibilities Include:
- Delivering expert clinical practice at an advanced level, ensuring safe and high-quality care through informed decision-making and autonomy.
- Demonstrating leadership and management skills to enhance and transform services.
- Engaging in research by applying existing studies and contributing to new research within the specialty.
- Facilitating education and development for oneself and others.
The Advanced Clinical Practitioner will operate independently as a core member of the medical/surgical team, holding responsibility for the medical management of a defined patient group under the guidance of the responsible Consultant. You will exhibit a high level of competence in specific knowledge areas, health assessments, and clinical decision-making. Providing specialized advice, education, and support to patients, their families, and other healthcare professionals will be essential. You will practice within established care protocols, monitored by the Lead ACP or designated Medical Lead. Additionally, you will advise and support the Care Group management team regarding overall service strategy and future development.
Desired Qualifications and Skills
To be successful in this role, candidates must demonstrate that they meet the ACP MSc academic requirements and provide evidence of experience across all four pillars of advanced practice. We are looking for individuals with exceptional interpersonal and organizational skills who can work autonomously and safely in challenging environments while providing senior support and leadership to trainee ACPs. In return, we offer the opportunity to enhance, influence, and further develop the service, along with structured career progression supported by experienced senior staff.
The service operates seven days a week, necessitating flexibility in working hours, including the ability to work weekends as required.
