About the Role

Islington Council is seeking a dedicated and experienced Criminal Law Specialist to join our dynamic Prosecutions and Licensing team. This role offers an exciting opportunity to contribute to the safety and well-being of our borough's residents by handling a diverse range of criminal cases.

Key Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with colleagues across various services to manage a wide array of criminal cases, ensuring effective prosecution for the benefit of Islington residents.
  • Provide legal counsel and representation at licensing committee hearings, defending appeals against decisions made by these committees.
  • Conduct thorough legal research and analysis to stay abreast of developments in relevant areas of law, advising senior legal staff on any implications for the team's work.
  • Prepare and present compelling cases in court and tribunals, advocating effectively on behalf of Islington Council.
  • Draft essential legal documents, including criminal charges, witness statements, and instructions to counsel, ensuring accuracy and clarity.

About You

We are looking for a highly motivated individual with a strong commitment to justice and public service. The ideal candidate will possess:

  • A minimum of two years post-qualification experience as a solicitor, barrister, or fellow of the Institute of Legal Executives.
  • Exceptional advocacy skills and a thorough understanding of criminal law procedures.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build strong relationships with colleagues and stakeholders.
