Maidenhead, Windsor and Maidenhead, United Kingdom National Trust Full time

Overview

We are thrilled to announce an opportunity for a Landscape Conservation Officer to become a vital part of our organization.

Engaging with some of the most breathtaking natural environments, regardless of the weather, your enthusiasm for the outdoors will motivate others as you work to ensure that our landscapes are well-maintained and visually appealing.

Work Environment

As a member of a dedicated team, you will report to the Lead Ranger overseeing the Cliveden Portfolio, supervising one staff member and coordinating several volunteers. Your focus will be on the management of Maidenhead and Cookham Commons, where you will play an essential role in planning and executing practical habitat conservation and access management strategies, ensuring our sites are presented to the highest standards. You will be involved in the stewardship of diverse habitats, including broadleaf woodlands, species-rich chalk grasslands, and SSSI grazing marshes, leading to a varied and fulfilling work experience.

Key Responsibilities

In your role as the Landscape Conservation Officer, you will oversee a small team of Rangers working across the portfolio. By adhering to the property's strategic business plan, you will develop and manage an adaptable work program for your team.

You will assist your fellow rangers in carrying out engagement and conservation initiatives, contributing to the achievement of HLS (Higher Level Stewardship) objectives. Your leadership will be crucial in maintaining high standards of presentation and property upkeep, successfully meeting Conservation Performance Indicator targets. Building and nurturing strong professional relationships with colleagues, contractors, tenants, and neighboring land managers will be a key aspect of your role.

Additionally, you will be responsible for effectively communicating our conservation efforts to a diverse audience, both new and existing, through events, guided walks, and community engagement. Understanding the importance of generating income from our countryside sites, your innovative business ideas will significantly contribute to the team's overall success.

Candidate Profile

We are eager to hear from candidates who possess the following qualifications:
• Proven experience in land management, access, and conservation, ideally in an upland context, including the delivery of small-scale projects and contractor supervision.
• Experience in developing and implementing work programs aimed at achieving conservation and access goals.
• A collaborative team player with a background in leading and managing teams of staff and/or volunteers.
• Practical skills across a wide range of habitats and estate management, with preferred certifications in chainsaw operation, tractor driving, and trailer towing.
• Ability to work safely, ensuring compliance through the creation of risk assessments and adherence to safety and environmental protocols.
• A demonstrated passion for nature and the outdoors, with the ability to engage visitors and help them appreciate the significance of our work.
• A valid UK driving license.
